Garrett Crochet Earns First Win Of Season Tuesday

Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Garrett Crochet improved to 1-1 in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Braves. The 24-year-old turned in a great start against a tough opponent, allowing one run on three hits (including a solo home run) and a walk with eight strikeouts over seven innings pitched. Crochet has looked strong in his two turns through the rotation with a 1.38 ERA, 16 strikeouts, and one walk in 13 IP. He will look to keep things rolling in his next start in a favorable matchup at the Royals.

Bryce Harper Hits Three Homers Tuesday, Plates Six

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper broke out of his slump in a big way in Tuesday's 9-4 win over the Reds. Harper went 3-for-4 with two solo home runs and a grand slam. The 31-year-old had gone hitless in his first 13 plate appearances but got in the hit column in a very loud way. This is a great sign for fantasy managers, although Harper deserves some leeway given his career success. Hopefully, this big game can kickstart his offensive season.

Jameson Taillon Throws Live Batting Practice

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Jameson Taillon (back) faced hitters in a live batting practice session on Tuesday in Arizona, per manager Craig Counsell. Taillon previously threw live BP on Friday in Arizona and then put in a bullpen session with the team on Sunday in Texas. If all goes well in his recovery from a back strain, the next step for Taillon could be a minor-league rehab appearance on Sunday with Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs will re-evaluate his status after those steps, but the 32-year-old right-hander is not a convincing fantasy stash after throwing for a career-worst 4.84 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and 140:41 K:BB through 154 1/3 innings in 2023. With Justin Steele (hamstring) on the shelf, however, Chicago's pitching staff could use the reinforcements. Swingman Javier Assad will take on a spot in the starting rotation and warrant streaming consideration in fantasy until Taillon is ready to make his 2024 debut.

Yankees Believe Gerrit Cole Is Close To Throwing

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said on Tuesday that he thinks starting pitcher Gerrit Cole (elbow) is close to throwing again. Boone didn't specify a day, but he added that things have gone well so far. New York placed Cole on the 60-day injured list to start the season as he works his way back from inflammation in his right elbow, so the right-hander won't be a factor for fantasy managers until the end of May at the earliest. If all goes well for the 33-year-old reigning American League Cy Young Award winner in his recovery, however, he could build his arm back up and return when first eligible. The 5-0 Yankees are likely to take things slowly with their ace, though. Cole led the AL in ERA (2.63) and hits per nine innings (6.8) last year, and his 0.98 WHIP was the best mark in the majors. In his stead, Clarke Schmidt and Luis Gil will serve as starters in the rotation and carry streaming appeal in fantasy in the proper matchups.

DJ LeMahieu Will Be Re-Evaluated Next Week

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said on Monday that second baseman DJ LeMahieu (foot) is progressing, and that he will be reimaged on or around April 12. "It does seem like he's doing a lot better over the last five days or so," Boone said. LeMahieu was diagnosed with a non-displaced fracture on the top of his right foot following an MRI on March 29. While an April return is possible, LeMahieu's progress will be determined by his pain tolerance after he was able to hit in the batting cages last Friday. In the veteran infielder's absence, super-utility man Oswaldo Cabrera has taken baseball by storm by hitting 8-for-20 (.400) with a 1.179 OPS, two home runs, one doubles, and seven RBI in his first five games. Cabrera will handle the bulk of the reps at third base until LeMahieu is cleared, and he's pushing for an everyday role.
