Yariel Rodriguez To Throw Live Batting Practice Friday

Toronto Blue Jays rookie right-hander Yariel Rodriguez (back) felt good coming out of his side session in camp on Sunday and is scheduled to throw live batting practice on Friday. Rodriguez is dealing with back spasms in spring training and has yet to pitch in a Grapefruit League game. The 26-year-old Cuban hurler is progressing, but he's unlikely to be ready by Opening Day in late March as the Blue Jays continue to stretch him out for a starting role. Rodriguez is an intriguing arm for the Blue Jays in the long-term, but he didn't pitch with an affiliated club at all in 2023 and is likely to be ramped up in the minors leagues early in 2024 before eventually becoming an option in the big leagues. Fantasy managers in single-year leagues should temper their expectations for Rodriguez, who will turn 27 in March.

Alek Manoah Plays Catch Monday

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah (shoulder) played some catch in camp on Monday, and the team will determine a plan for him going forward based on how he feels afterwards. Manoah was scratched from his Grapefruit League start over the weekend due to right-shoulder soreness. It makes the 26-year-old a question mark for the team's Opening Day starting rotation now. Manoah's fantasy value is down considerably after a disastrous 2023 campaign in which he was demoted to the minors twice and also dealt with arm issues. It doesn't help that he's now dealing with a shoulder injury in spring training, which could very well delay the start of his 2024 season. Stay tuned for more updates on Manoa's next step in camp.

Ricky Tiedemann Faces Hitters Sunday

Toronto Blue Jays left-handed pitching prospect Ricky Tiedemann (hamstring) faced hitters in a simulated game in camp on Sunday and took the time to fine-tune his changeup. Tiedemann, the No. 29 overall prospect in baseball per MLB Pipeline, is working his way back after a minor hamstring and calf issue cost him some time early in spring training. The young southpaw looked great on Sunday and is confident he can get up to the four-inning range by the end of camp. "Hopefully, late this coming week I'll be able to get back out there in a game," Tiedemann said. The 21-year-old has some of the best stuff in the game among pitching prospects, and with both Kevin Gausman and Alek Manoah dealing with shoulder injuries, it's possible that Tiedemann could open the 2024 regular season in Toronto's starting rotation.

Sonny Gray Exits With Hamstring Tightness Monday

St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Sonny Gray (hamstring) exited Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Washington Nationals due to hamstring tightness. Rather than putting a timetable on the injury, Gray did not speak with the media as he prefers to know more about the tightness before commenting. The right-hander tossed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless ball while allowing one hit with one strikeout against zero walks before his departure. The veteran signed a three-year, $75 million contract with the Cardinals this winter on the heels of a 2023 campaign in which he worked to a 2.79 ERA across a career-high 32 starts and 184 innings pitched with the Minnesota Twins. More information should be made available on the prized righty in short order.

Cedric Mullins Exits With Hamstring Discomfort

Baltimore Orioles outfielder Cedric Mullins (hamstring) departed Monday's Cactus League game against the Minnesota Twins with hamstring discomfort. It's an ominous issue for the 29-year-old who spent two different IL stints with groin issues last season. It was a down season for Mullins at the plate in 2023 as he hit just .233 with 15 home runs, 19 stolen bases, and a .721 OPS across 455 trips to the plate, production that graded out 1% below the league average, as per his 99 wRC+. At the same time, he does sport a solid combination of power and speed, when healthy, while he should be able to put up plenty of runs scored on what should be a potent Orioles offense in 2024. His fantasy stock has dipped, but he is certainly a valued asset again in the 2024 campaign.
