Gary Sanchez Could Make Spring Debut On March 14

The Milwaukee Brewers are targeting March 14 for catcher Gary Sanchez (hand) to make his Cactus League debut. Sanchez's 2023 season came to an early end due to a fractured hand, and something came up in his physical (unrelated to last year's injury) that delayed his official signing with the Brew Crew this offseason. It has caused the 31-year-old veteran backstop to get a late start to spring training, but he's ramping things up now. Sanchez will have under two weeks to get up to speed for Opening Day, where he's expected to serve as William Contreras' backup while also seeing at-bats as the designated hitter. He had a resurgent season for the Padres by hitting 19 homers in 72 games, and while Sanchez can provide decent pop in two-catcher leagues, fantasy managers shouldn't be expecting a repeat of 2023.

Wade Miley "50-50" To Be Ready For Opening Day

Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy said on Friday morning that left-hander Wade Miley (undisclosed) is "50-50" to be ready for the start of the 2024 regular season. "We'll let you know more in about 10 days," Murphy said. It's unclear exactly what is wrong with Miley, but the soft-tossing southpaw may not be a part of Milwaukee's Opening Day rotation. The 37-year-old veteran has been slowed by elbow and shoulder injuries in recent seasons, so perhaps he's had another arm setback. Even if Miley was healthy, he wouldn't be very attractive to fantasy managers in mixed leagues. At best, he's a deep-league streaming option in favorable matchups, but his lack of strikeout upside keeps his fantasy floor low.

Yuki Matsui Resumes Playing Catch

San Diego Padres left-hander Yuki Matsui (back) has resumed playing catch in camp on Friday. The 28-year-old reliever was shut down from throwing last weekend due to inflammation in his back, but it wasn't a serious concern and he's already back to throwing. It remains unclear when he'll be able to get into another Cactus League game after striking out the side in his impressive debut last Thursday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Barring another setback, though, Matsui will have time to get up to speed for the two-game opening series against the Dodgers in Korea on March 20-21. After signing a five-year, $28 million deal with the Friars in December, Matsui should have a significant late-inning role in SD in his rookie season, perhaps even taking over closing duties if Robert Suarez struggles in the ninth-inning role.

Luis Urias To Throw On Friday

Seattle Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said that infielder Luis Urias (shoulder) is going to start trying to throw in infield drills in camp on Friday, but he'll be limited. The hope is that Urias can be ready for Opening Day in late March. The 26-year-old is being held back in spring training due to right-shoulder inflammation, and he's still no guarantee to be ready by Opening Day. If healthy, Urias will have an opportunity to earn playing time at the hot corner in Seattle, but he hasn't proven to be fantasy relevant in mixed leagues in recent seasons. In his six years in the majors with the Padres, Brewers and Red Sox, Urias holds a .234/.333/.385 slash line with 48 homers, 180 RBI and nine steals in 445 games. He's become somewhat of a Quad-A player that just hasn't gotten over the hump at the highest level.

Matt Brash Could Resume Throwing Next Week

An MRI exam on Seattle Mariners right-hander Matt Brash (elbow) confirmed that he's dealing with medial right-elbow inflammation, and he could resume throwing in camp next week, according to general manager Justin Hollander. It's great news after a recent report earlier this week suggested that Brash could be dealing with a serious arm injury. The 25-year-old was vital to Seattle's bullpen last year by going 9-4 with a league-leading 78 relief appearances. In 70 2/3 innings pitched in his second season in the big leagues, Brash had a strong 3.06 ERA (2.26 FIP), a 1.33 WHIP, his first four career saves, 29 walks and 107 strikeouts. Even though Brash's injury isn't serious, he'll still likely begin the year on the injured list. He had 25 holds in 2023 as well, so when healthy, Brash is certainly fantasy relevant despite his lack of save chances.
