Livan Soto Claimed Off Waivers By The Angels

The Los Angeles Angels have claimed infielder Livan Soto off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles. Soto was designated for assignment by the Angels last month before being claimed by the O's, who subsequently DFA'd him again. He ends up back with the Angels and will likely just serve as infield depth for the big league club. He has a solid .375/.414/.531 career triple-slash line at the big league level but the sample size is quite small (64 at-bats between 2022-23).

Chris Sale Had Fully Healthy Offseason, Ready To Compete In 2024

Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Chris Sale told reporters on Saturday that this is his first offseason since 2019 that he hasn't had limitations. The veteran southpaw has dealt with a ton of injuries over the last four seasons, including Tommy John surgery in 2020 and a nagging shoulder issue in 2023. As a result, he's pitched just 151 total innings since 2019. It's very encouraging to hear he hasn't had any type of injury or setback so far this offseason. He looked sharp in spurts of the 2023 season with Boston, including a strong finish to the season in which he allowed two or fewer runs in six of his last nine starts. That was enough for the Braves to give Sale a two-year, $38 million extension after trading for him in late December. Sale, who runs 35 on March 30, will always carry injury risk but he can still be effective when healthy.

Phillies Sign Relievers Austin Brice And Ricardo Pinto

The Philadelphia Phillies have signed relief pitchers Austin Brice and Ricardo Pinto. Brice, who last pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022, was inked to a minor league deal while Pinto was just added to the camp roster. Brice owns a career 5.12 ERA over 168 2/3 major league innings of relief and Pinto, who pitched for the Phillies back in 2017, owns a career 8.44 ERA in just 32 big league innings. Neither of these players should make much of a fantasy impact if they end up making the big league roster.

Shohei Ohtani Not Taking Batting Practice On Sunday

Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (elbow), who was scheduled to face live pitching for the first time since his offseason elbow surgery, will not take batting practice on Sunday. This was obviously an anticipated batting practice session, considering the star power of Ohtani, but manager Dave Roberts told reporters that the schedule change has nothing to do with the superstar's health. Roberts added that he wants Ohtani to chart his own schedule. It shouldn't be a surprise if Ohtani started taking swings against live pitching as early as Monday. The fact that the two-way star won't be pitching this season certainly puts a damper on his overall fantasy prospects, but he should still be able to return high-end value as offensive player hitting in the middle of a loaded Dodgers lineup.

Matt Canterino Healthy At Camp

Minnesota Twins right-hander Matt Canterino (elbow), who had Tommy John surgery in August of 2022 and didn't pitch at all last year, is fully healthy at spring training and is eager to show what he can do after being drafted in the second round in 2019. The 26-year-old has been dominant in three minor-league seasons with a 1.48 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 130 strikeouts in 85 innings over 26 games (25 starts), but he's also rarely been healthy. He was facing hitters in October, though, and feels like he's back to normal entering the 2024 season. The Twins will build Canterino up as a starter to begin the year, but he's expected to be on a bit of a pitch count and will almost certainly stay down on the farm for all of 2024. However, if he can return to his pre-injury form, the pitching prospect could be an option for Minnesota's starting rotation in 2025.
