Christian Cairo Returning To Cleveland

The Atlanta Braves returned Rule 5 selection Christian Cairo to the Cleveland Guardians. During spring training, Cairo posted a modest .179/.294/.250 slash line with two doubles. However, he was unable to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster and will continue his professional career with Cleveland. Fantasy managers should expect the Guardians to assign the infielder to minor-league camp. Last summer, Cario spent most of his time at Double-A and Triple-A. At the top level of the minor leagues, the 23-year-old posted a .233/.355/.314 slash line with five doubles, three triples, and two home runs. He posted a slightly higher .252/.353/.344 line at Double-A. If Cario continues his development at Triple-A, he could push for an MLB debut later this summer

Oscar Colas Optioned To Triple-A

The Chicago White Sox have optioned outfielder Oscar Colas to Triple-A Charlotte. The 26-year-old held a modest /250/.333/.375 line through 10 games at spring training. Colas will now have to work his way back to the big leagues from Triple-A. Last summer, Colas appeared in 13 MLB contests and posted a .273./368/.273 slash line. During the 2023 campaign, Colas made his MLB debut and logged 75 starts in the majors. During this stint, he posted a .216/.257/.314 line with nine doubles and five home runs. Across 170 career games with Triple-A Charlotte, Colas has gone deep 22 times and held a .260/.340/.433 slash line. The 26-year-old has swiped 15 bags and held a modest 75:172 BB:K. When he does return to the majors, he could have value in deeper AL-only formats.

Austin Gomber To Open Season On Injured List

The Denver Post's Patrick Saunders reports that Colorado Rockies left-hander Austin Gomber (shoulder) will open the 2025 regular season on the injured list as he recovers from left-shoulder soreness that he dealt with in spring training. The good news, though, is that Gomber is expected to rejoin the starting rotation early in the season. The 31-year-old veteran southpaw's only Grapefruit League appearance came way back on Feb. 25. Until he returns, the Rockies will roll with a four-man rotation consisting of Kyle Freeland, Ryan Feltner, German Marquez and Antonio Senzatela. When healthy, Gomber is merely a deep-league option, primarily when he's on the road. There's just not much fantasy upside for a pitcher with limited strikeout potential that has trouble keeping the ball out of the air.

Chase Dollander Likely To Begin In Triple-A

Colorado Rockies pitching prospect Chase Dollander struck out seven in 3 2/3 scoreless innings in a 3-1 win over the division-rival San Francisco Giants in Cactus League action on Tuesday night, but the ninth overall pick out of Tennessee in 2023 hasn't gone without ups and downs in spring training. He allowed five runs and needed 50 pitches in 1 2/3 innings on March 8 against the Athletics. Colorado views the 23-year-old as a potential future ace, but The Denver Post's Patrick Saunders writes that he's likely to open the year at Triple-A Albuquerque. As it stands now, the Rockies are expected to open the year with a four-man rotation of Kyle Freeland, Ryan Feltner, German Marquez and Antonio Senzatela. Dollander, the team's top prospect per MLB Pipeline, will make his MLB debut in 2025, but it could depend on the health and performance of the veterans already in the rotation.

Edwin Diaz's Velocity Down This Spring

New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz's velocity has been down during spring training games. The stadium radar gun had Diaz's four-seam fastball sitting between 93-95 mph during his Grapefruit League outing on Wednesday, while StatCast has him averaging 95.7 mph with his four-seamer this spring. That would be the 30-year-old right-hander's lowest velocity since 2020. However, manager Carlos Mendoza thinks Diaz's velocity will continue to increase as he approaches real games next week. Two years ago before Diaz injured his knee, he was averaging 99 mph in spring games. A rival scout watching Diaz on Wednesday said he doesn't look like "the same guy." He hasn't allowed a run in his last three spring outings, but his outings haven't been clean, either. It's possible that Diaz won't be throwing as hard as he used to, but it doesn't mean he still won't be an elite fantasy closer.
