Luis Rengifo Now In Question For Opening Day

The Los Angeles Angels plan to back off with infielder Luis Rengifo (hamstring) because of more tightness in his hamstring that caused him to be scratched from the Cactus League lineup on Saturday for the second time this week. Manager Ron Washington said Rengifo was already behind after missing time in camp with an illness, and now the skipper is unsure if Rengifo will be ready for Opening Day later this month. The Angels aren't going to take any chances with the 28-year-old utility infielder, which makes sense given the fact that starting shortstop Zach Neto (shoulder) is already going to start the year on the injured list. When healthy, Rengifo is expected to be an everyday player for the Angels, primarily at second and third base. He offers limited power, but his contact and speed skills make him an attractive target for infield depth in deeper leagues. If he's not ready, it will only increase the odds of infield prospect Christian Moore making the Opening Day roster.

Jared Young, Austin Warren Optioned to Triple-A

The New York Mets have assigned first baseman Jared Young and right-handed pitcher Austin Warren to Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday. Young signed an MLB contract with the Mets earlier in the offseason. However, he will begin his 2025 season in the minor leagues. Last season, Young spent his entire campaign playing for Triple-A Memphis. Across 74 contests, Young posted a .285/.411/.506 slash line with 15 and 11 round-trippers. He last appeared in the major league during the 2023 season with the Chicago Cubs. Warren was claimed off waivers by the Mets during the winter. Last summer, Warren logged 10 2/3 innings in the majors with the Giants. He held a 1.69 ERA with a 1.31 WHIP. Across 23 frames at Triple-A, Warren held a 4.70 ERA with a 1.22 WHIP. Both players will be used as depth options for the Mets throughout the 2025 season.

Nicky Lopez Reassigned To Minors

Chicago Cubs infielder Nicky Lopez was part of a handful of cuts made by the organization this weekend. The most shocking was probably Lopez who was expected to make the 28-man roster for the season-opener in Japan. Lopez signed a minor-league deal with the Cubs and was competing for a utility infielder spot on the roster. Unfortunately, Lopez wasn't able to beat out Gage Workman or Vidal Brujan for one of those final spots on the roster. The expectation is that Lopez is going to be released, so that he could attempt to catch on elsewhere.

Travis Jankowski Optioned To Minors

Chicago Cubs outfielder Travis Jankowski was part of a handful of cuts made on Sunday. The veteran outfielder has been reassigned to minor-league camp as the Cubs continue to trim down their roster. He joined the team as a non-roster invitee, but it doesn't appear he has impressed enough to remain with the big league club. Last season, Jankowski slashed .200/.266/.242 with 12 RBI and 11 stolen bases across 104 games with the Texas Rangers. It's unclear if Jankowski will remain in the minor leagues with the Cubs or ask for his release, so he can attempt to play elsewhere.

Tommy Pham Exits Early On Sunday

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Tommy Pham (hip) was removed early during Sunday's spring training contest. Pham went 1-for-2 at the plate before exiting the contest due to left hip tightness. The severity of the injury is unknown right now, but Pham will likely undergo additional testing. Fantasy managers should expect another update on Pham after the testing is completed. Pham signed with Pittsburgh over the offseason after hitting .248/.305/.368 with nine home runs and 39 RBI with three different teams last season.
