Clay Holmes Strikes Out Eight In Grapefruit League Win

New York Mets starting pitcher Clay Holmes impressed on Sunday, striking out eight batters in 3 2/3 innings of work, allowing zero runs on just one hit and three walks in a 7-6 Grapefruit League win over the Nationals. The righty has yet to allow a run this spring in 11 innings, yielding a total of two hits to go along with a 4:13 BB:K. Fantasy managers shouldn't put too much stock in spring results, but for someone who has worked exclusively as a reliever the last six seasons, the 31-year-old certainly looks the part so far. The veteran pitcher is looking like a value pick at this point, with RotoBaller ranking him at 255 overall, well ahead of his NFBC ADP of 300.

Matt Manning Optioned To Triple-A Toledo

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Matt Manning was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Sunday following a spring in which he allowed eight earned runs on 10 hits and eight walks while striking out six batters in six innings of work. The former ninth-overall draft pick spent most of 2024 at Triple-A but made five starts for Detroit, posting a 4.88 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, and an 8.9 percent K-BB% in 27 2/3 IP. The 27-year-old will presumably be one of the first names called if and when Detroit needs a starter, but with a career ERA in the majors of 4.43, a 1.29 WHIP, and a lowly 6.31 K/9, there isn't much appeal for fantasy, even when he gets recalled.

Tomoyuki Sugano Strong Again, Strikes Out Five In Three Innings

Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano dazzled for three innings in Sunday's 4-3 Grapefruit League win over the Twins, allowing no runs, hits, or walks in the contest while striking out five of the nine batters he faced. That makes seven scoreless innings for the righty this spring, allowing four hits thus far with a 2:7 BB:K. With fellow starter Grayson Rodriguez possibly starting the season on the IL, the O's will need the rest of their arms healthy, and so far, Sugano has looked good. The 35-year-old pitcher out of Japan is worth a look at the end of deeper drafts, as RotoBaller ranks him at 324 overall, well ahead of his NFBC ADP of 353.

Matt Strahm Dealing With Sore Shoulder

Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Matt Strahm (shoulder) is dealing with soreness in his shoulder. He has not taken the mound since Wednesday and his velocity was slightly down. The southpaw went for testing, the results came back clean. Manager Rob Thompson noted that there is "nothing wrong" and the team will give him a few days off. Last season, the 33-year-old was one of the top pieces in the Philadelphia bullpen. He tallied 18 holds and three saves operating as both an option in the eighth and ninth innings. Across 62 2/3 innings, the 33-year-old posted a 1.87 ERA with a 0.75 WHIP with 79 punchouts. Strahm generated a stellar 2.43 xERA (99th percentile) and a .188 xBA (96th percentile). When healthy, he will return to a high-leverage role, likely operating as the setup man for Jordan Romano.

Trayce Thompson Dominating In Grapefruit League

Boston Red Sox outfielder Trayce Thompson has been one of the top performing players in the Grapefruit League. Through 11 games, Thompson has gone 9-for-23 with two doubles and six home runs. He has tallied 12 RBI, swiped three bags and held a 6:7 BB:K ratio. His home run total is the most in all of spring training. Earlier in the offseason, Thompson signed a non-roster invite with the Red Sox. Last season, the 33-year-old spent his entire summer at the Triple-A level, split between the Syracuse Mets and the Iowa Cubs. Across 107 games, Thompson posted a .233/.315/.471 slash line with 19 doubles and 23 long balls. Through seven seasons in the majors, he has held a .212/.400/.411. If he continues to produce in spring training, he could be the top option at Triple-A when Boston needs additional outfield depth in the majors.
