Jakob Marsee Reassigned To Minor-League Camp

Miami Marlins outfield prospect Jakob Marsee (oblique) has been reassigned to minor league camp as part of Miami's first round of roster cuts this spring. The 23-year-old was a non-roster invitee this spring but had been battling an oblique strain sustained in mid-February and had yet to make a Grapefruit League appearance. The 2022 sixth-round draft pick has quickly worked through the minors, earning the Arizona Fall League MVP in 2023, then moving from Double-A to Triple-A in 2024, and will likely make his MLB debut this season. For now, however, the left-handed hitter will likely begin the year at Triple-A. Marsee put together a .200-10-47-90-51 line over 137 minor league games across two levels last year, but showed well at Triple-A with a .275/.370/.363 slash line over 22 games, with the OBP buoyed by superb plate discipline. The product out of Central Michigan University owns an elite 16.9 percent walk rate over his minor league career, allowing him to get on base and utilize his ability to steal bases. Unless desperate for steals, though, fantasy managers may want to take a wait-and-see approach with Marsee whenever he gets the call to the majors, and he's off the season-long fantasy draft radar.

Aaron Ashby Suffers Oblique Strain On Monday

Milwaukee Brewers left-hander Aaron Ashby (oblique) left his Cactus League outing in the second inning on Monday against the division-rival Cincinnati Reds due to an oblique strain, according to manager Pat Murphy. The early sense is that it won't be a months-long absence, but that won't be confirmed until Ashby has imaging done on Tuesday. Before leaving on Monday, the 26-year-old southpaw was having issues with his command (two walks). Even if this doesn't end up being a serious oblique injury, Ashby will more than likely open the 2025 season on the injured list. He also missed all of 2023 with a shoulder surgery, so he's no stranger to the injury bug. Ashby has always been intriguing for his strikeout upside, but he has an inconsistent track record and hasn't been able to stay healthy for long stretches. Veteran lefty Jose Quintana, who was signed on Monday, could take Ashby's rotation spot to begin the year.

Yankees Reassign Roderick Arias To Minor-League Camp

The New York Yankees have reassigned shortstop prospect Roderick Arias to minor league camp. The 20-year-old was a non-roster invitee this spring and had gone 3-for-7 over his first five Grapefruit League games, but will head back to the minors where he finished last season at Single-A. The switch-hitter compiled a .233-13-74-78-37 line over the 2024 campaign in 124 games, along with a strong 12.3 percent walk rate, but the 31.0 percent strikeout rate was concerning. The Dominican will want to work on that this season if he wants to keep progressing through the organization, although he's still a couple of years away from the big leagues, with a 2027 ETA per MLB.com's top prospects list. The Yankees' No. 7 overall prospect could still be growing into this power and clearly has speed, so dynasty managers will want to pay close attention to how this season plays out as he's got the potential to be an impactful player for fantasy.

Cam Smith Triples, Adds Three More RBI To His Total

Houston Astros third base prospect Cam Smith kept the spring contributions coming in Monday's 5-3 Grapefruit League win over the Marlins. The 22-year-old went 1-for-3 with a three-run triple and is now 4-for-10 with six RBI during the spring, plus he owns a 3:1 BB:K. The former first-round pick is making a good impression this spring, and although he is not projected to be on the major league roster come Opening Day, Smith could be making the case for a call-up later this year should he remain hot throughout the 2025 minor league campaign. The 6-foot-3 right-handed hitter showed well in his first taste of pro ball last year, slashing .313/.396/.609 with seven home runs in 115 at-bats across three levels, finishing the year at Double-A.

Caleb Durbin Hits Second Home Run, Nabs First Steal Of Spring

Milwaukee Brewers infield prospect Caleb Durbin smacked a leadoff home run, his second home run of the spring, in Monday's 5-4 Cactus League loss to the Reds. The 25-year-old also swiped his first bag of the spring after stealing 29 in just 82 games at Triple-A last season and running wild for 29 steals in 24 games during the 2024 Arizona Fall League. The former 14th-round draft pick is an on-base machine, walking more than he's struck out over his 281 MiLB career games (134:111 BB:K), resulting in a career OBP of .374. As of now, the right-handed hitter is projected to be on the weak side of a second base platoon in Milwaukee, but should he earn a full-time gig, the fantasy impact could be felt immediately. ATC projections see him stealing 13 bases in only 268 PA, but that feels more like a baseline forecast, so there's upside here. With eligibility at 2B, 3B, and SS on Yahoo, he's got added fantasy appeal, so managers should monitor closely in the lead-up to Opening Day for any positive playing time developments.
