Tyler Black Battling Back Stiffness

Milwaukee Brewers infielder Tyler Black (back) is dealing with back stiffness and has yet to make his Cactus League debut. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status but should be viewed as day-to-day for the time being. Last season, the 24-year-old made his MLB debut. Across 16 contests, Black held a .204/.316/.245 line with two doubles and three stolen bases. He showed a strong eye at the plate as he drew walks at an elite 12.3 percent rate but generated a low .191 xBA. However, across 102 contests at Triple-A Nashville, Black posted a strong .258/.374/.429 line with 14 doubles, 14 home runs, and 20 stolen bases. This was similar to the .273/.411/.513 line he held across 84 games at Double-A in 2023. When Black returns to action, he will likely compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster but is expected to open the season with Triple-A.

Mark Canha Expected To Be A First Baseman, Designated Hitter

Milwaukee Brewers first baseman/outfielder Mark Canha is expected to see most of his time as a first baseman and a designated hitter. Canha signed a minor-league contract with the Brewers last week and was invited to spring training. Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel noted that Canha could also be deployed off the bench as a pinch-hitter. The 36-year-old has spent most of his 10-year MLB career in the outfield but is slated to shift to the infield in Milwaukee. Last season, Canha spent time with the Tigers and Giants and held a .242/.344/.346 line with 20 doubles and seven home runs. If Canha performs well in the camp, he could earn a role operating as the No. 2 first baseman behind Rhys Hoskins or as a designated hitter in a platoon role.

Marcus Stroman Will Not Start On Tuesday

New York Yankees starting pitcher Marcus Stroman will not make his scheduled start on Tuesday. Instead, the right-hander will stay in Tampa to pitch live batting practice. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status during camp but he is currently facing an uphill battle to open the season in the rotation. He is currently penciled in to be the No. 6 option behind Clarke Schmidt (back) but could slide into the rotation if Schmidt continues to be limited due to his current injury. Schmidt has been limited during the early part of camp but is unlikely to miss time in the regular season. As a result, Stroman will likely open the 2025 campaign in a long relief role. Last season, Stroman held a 4.31 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP across 154 2/3 innings. He tallied 113 punchouts and generated a high 4.94 xERA. Stroman will carry little fantasy value if he opens the season in the bullpen.

Alec Marsh Completes 25-Pitch Bullpen Session

Kansas City Royals right-handed pitcher Alec Marsh (shoulder) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session on Monday. After the session, Marsh expressed that this was his "first bullpen of the year." The 26-year-old is currently working his way back from shoulder tightness. Marsh began feeling this tightness during an offseason throwing program. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status as he is still slightly behind schedule. Marsh is expected to compete for a spot in the Kansas City rotation when he is cleared for action. Last season, the 26-year-old posted a 4.53 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP across 129 frames. He tallied 123 punchouts but generated a hefty 4.97 xERA. He also generated a weak 38.8 percent ground-ball rate. Marsh will compete alongside Kris Bubic for the final spot in the rotation.

Cade Horton Throws Bullpen Session

Chicago Cubs starting pitching prospect Cade Horton (shoulder) completed a bullpen session on Sunday. The right-handed pitcher faced four batters in the brief session. This was the first time Horton faced live batters since being shut down last June. Horton is considered not only the team's top pitching prospect but also one of the top options in their system. Before being shut down last summer, Horton was nearing his MLB debut. He opened the 2024 campaign by getting his second look at Double-A, where he posted a stellar 1.10 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP across 16 1/3 innings. He tallied 18 punchouts and served up just two walks. He was then given a brief look at Triple-A, where he allowed 15 runs in just 18 frames. The former seventh-overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft is a name to monitor during camp, as he should be in contention to make his MLB debut later this season if he can move past this injury. He will likely open the season with Triple-A Iowa.
