James Karinchak Could Return In September

Cleveland Guardians hard-throwing right-handed reliever James Karinchak (shoulder) went on a minor-league rehab assignment to Triple-A Columbus after touching as high as 93 mph while pitching at the team's spring training facility in Goodyear, Ariz. Manager Steven Vogt said there's a chance that Karinchak could pitch in the big leagues before the regular season ends. He reported to spring training in February with right-shoulder fatigue and has been working his way back ever since. If the 28-year-old isn't ready to pitch for the Guardians in September, it's unlikely that he'd be included on the postseason roster in October after missing the entire season. And if Karinchak returns in September, expected him to be eased into low-leverage spots. When healthy, Karinchak has the ability to be one of the most dominant high-leverage arms in baseball.

Victor Robles "Should Be Fine" After Leaving Early On Friday

Seattle Mariners outfielder Victor Robles (elbow) was pulled in the eighth inning on Friday night against the St. Louis Cardinals after being hit by a pitch on his left elbow pad in the fifth inning. However, Robles' exit was more precautionary, and he "should be fine" for the second game of the series on Saturday, according to interim manager Dan Wilson. Before leaving the eventual 6-1 win at Busch Stadium, Robles was 0-for-3 with a run scored and a strikeout out of the leadoff spot. He was replaced in right field by Mitch Haniger. The 27-year-old Dominican is likely to be back in the lineup on Saturday, but fantasy managers will want to double check first. Robles has been a new player since being traded to Seattle and has earned regular playing time by hitting .307 (54-for-176) with four homers, 19 RBI and 19 stolen bases in his 61 games played.

Max Meyer Heading To The Injured List

According to sources, the Miami Marlins are placing right-hander Max Meyer (undisclosed) on the 15-day injured list on Saturday due to an undisclosed ailment. Meyer will no longer be available to make his scheduled start on Sunday at LoanDepot Park in the series finale against the division-rival Philadelphia Phillies. If Meyer has a minimal stint on the IL, he'll only be able to provide fantasy managers with one or two more starts to close out the year. The 25-year-old former third overall pick by the Fish in 2020 out of Minnesota, Meyer has been very inconsistent in 11 starts (57 innings) in 2024 in his second year in the big leagues, going 3-5 with a 5.68 ERA (5.92 FIP), a 1.42 WHIP and a 46:19 K:BB. He missed all of the 2023 campaign after Tommy John surgery. Don't sleep on him in 2025, though, as he could be a viable back-end starter in mixed leagues another year removed from his elbow surgery.

CJ Abrams Back In Leadoff Spot For Game 1 On Saturday

Washington Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams will return to the leadoff spot for the team in Game 1 of their doubleheader on Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates and right-hander Luis L. Ortiz at PNC Park. Abrams got the day off in the series opener at PNC Park on Thursday before Friday's contest was postponed due to inclement weather. Fantasy managers in all formats may want to keep the 23-year-old on the bench on Saturday given the way he's struggled lately. Abrams has one hit in 10 at-bats in three games to begin the month and has gone 2-for-26 (.077) with a walk and six strikeouts in his last seven games since Aug. 26. He's still had a dynamic year in 2024 with 18 home runs, 62 RBI and 28 stolen bases, but there's no secret Abrams is scuffling right now. He has never faced Ortiz in his career as he looks to get out of his funk during a doubleheader on Saturday.

Austin Adams Nearing Rehab Assignment

Oakland Athletics right-handed reliever Austin Adams (forearm) threw to hitters on Friday and felt good, according to manager Mark Kotsay. If Adams feels good in the coming days, he could begin a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas. And if he doesn't suffer a setback on what is likely to be a short rehab assignment, Adams could rejoin Oakland's bullpen by sometime next week. The 33-year-old veteran previously threw a bullpen session on Tuesday as he attempts to return from right-forearm tendinitis. When the A's feel he's ready, Adams will return to a late-inning, high-leverage setup role in Oakland's big-league bullpen in front of lights-out closer Mason Miller. Adams is currently 1-2 on the year with a 3.92 ERA (4.49 FIP), a 1.48 WHIP, 53 strikeouts and 23 walks in 41 1/3 innings out of the bullpen.
