Yankees Haven't Decided If They'll Call Up Jasson Dominguez

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said the team has not yet decided if it will promote top outfield prospect Jasson Dominguez when rosters expand on Sunday. Dominguez was slashing .299/.351/.453 with four home runs and 17 RBI through 34 contests with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre entering action on Friday. "We'll see," Boone said. "He's certainly one of those guys that will be in conversation for that. I feel like he's doing a good job after being a little slow coming back from the [left oblique] injury. I feel like he's been stringing together some days of good work and good at-bats. He's definitely a name in consideration." The 21-year-old came up for one game as the 27th man for a doubleheader on Aug. 18 and went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts before being sent back down. It would be a surprise if Dominguez weren't called up, but he also wouldn't be guaranteed regular playing time.

Austin Wells Hitting Cleanup For Yankees On Saturday

New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells is behind the plate and batting cleanup on Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals and right-hander Kyle Gibson at Yankee Stadium, a day after hitting two home runs and driving in four runs in a 6-3 win. The 25-year-old mustachioed catcher has earned primary duties behind the plate this year for the Bombers and has been extremely hot at the plate lately. The former 28th overall pick in 2020 out of the University of Arizona is batting .319 (23-for-72) in the month of August with four home runs, four doubles, 15 RBI and four runs scored in 21 total games to bring his season slash line up to .256/.348/.444 with a .792 OPS in his second year in the big leagues. Wells is now up to 12 home runs and 42 RBI on the year in 93 games played. He has never faced Gibson yet in his career.

Luis Gil To Make A Rehab Start On Sunday

New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil (back) is scheduled to begin a minor-league rehab assignment on Sunday, according to manager Aaron Boone. It will be Gil's first start since he left his start on Aug. 20 against the Cleveland Guardians after three-plus innings with lower-back discomfort. Gil landed on the 15-day injured list the next day, although Boone called the injury "minor." He was able to throw a successful bullpen session on Aug. 25 and threw roughly 65 pitches in a live batting practice session with Double-A Somerset on Aug. 27. The Yankees are planning to have Gil return in a starting role instead of as a long man out of the bullpen, which is good news for fantasy managers holding him. The 26-year-old Dominican has had a triumphant return from Tommy John surgery in 2024, although he did allow seven earned runs in seven innings in his two starts before landing on the IL.

Jon Berti's Rehab Assignment To Extend Into Next Week

New York Yankees infielder Jon Berti (calf) will continue his minor-league rehab assignment through Sunday and will play "a handful of days next week, too," according to manager Aaron Boone. Berti started his rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset on Aug. 24 and has gone 3-for-19 (.158) with a homer in his first seven games. Berti suffered a left-calf strain on May 24 and aggravated the injury during the All-Star break in mid-July, which is why he hasn't been able to rejoin the big-league club yet. He was moved to the 60-day injured list on June 12 and has been given at least two platelet-rich plasma injections. At the earliest, the 34-year-old utility infielder won't be back in the Bronx until late next week. He's had only 55 at-bats in 2024 and is hitting .273 with a homer, six RBI and four stolen bases for the Yanks.

Ian Hamilton Suffers Setback With Back Spasms

New York Yankees right-hander Ian Hamilton (back, lat) was scratched from his minor-league outing on Friday at Double-A Somerset due to back spasms, according to manager Aaron Boone. It's pretty disappointing for Hamilton and the Yankees, as he was most likely going to be reinstated from the 15-day injured list on Saturday if he got through his outing on Friday unscathed. The 29-year-old has been out of action since the middle of June due to a right-lat strain, and now he's dealing with back issues. Hamilton struck out six over 2 1/3 scoreless innings for Somerset on Aug. 24 and 27. It's unclear how much time this setback will cost him, but with a month left in the season, he should be able to make it back to New York's bullpen before the end of the regular season. Hamilton has a 4.55 ERA and 1.58 WHIP with 30 strikeouts in his 29 2/3 relief innings for the Yanks in 2024.
