Victor Robles Out With Hip Issue

Seattle Mariners outfielder Victor Robles (hip) is absent from Wednesday's lineup due to a hip issue as the M's look to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. We'll consider Robles to be day-to-day for now until we know more about the severity of his hip injury. With Julio Rodriguez (ankle) still serving as the designated hitter, Luke Raley will start in center field and hit leadoff on Wednesday against Dodgers right-hander Jack Flaherty. If Robles' hip injury isn't all that serious, he could be back for Friday's series opener at home against the San Francisco Giants after having an additional day off on Thursday. The 27-year-old Dominican has been rejuvenated by a change of scenery since being traded to Seattle, hitting .280 (40-for-143) with three homers, 11 RBI and 14 steals in 50 games while also taking over center field duties since J-Rod's ankle injury. Rodriguez is expected to return to CF soon, though, which could make it more difficult for Robles to crack the lineup.

Joey Votto Announces His Retirement

Six-time All-Star first baseman Joey Votto announced his retirement from professional baseball on his Instagram account on Wednesday night, ending an illustrious career that included a National League MVP award, a lifetime .920 OPS and one of the best power-patience combinations of his generation. Votto spent all 17 of his big-league seasons with the Cincinnati Reds. The 40-year-old Canadian left-handed slugger signed with the Toronto Blue Jays in the winter and was hoping to be a veteran option at first base and designated hitter for them in 2024, but an ankle injury suffered in spring training prevented him from returning to the majors leagues this year. He had only 51 plate appearances for Triple-A Buffalo and posted a weak .489 OPS, prompting him to hang up his cleats. In his 17 seasons for the Reds, Votto slashed .294/.409/.511 with 356 home runs, 1,144 RBI and 80 stolen bases in 2,056 career regular-season games.

Miguel Rojas Scratched With Hamstring Issue

Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Miguel Rojas (hamstring) was scratched from Wednesday's lineup against the Seattle Mariners at Dodger Stadium due to a hamstring flare-up, according to manager Dave Roberts. However, Rojas is expected to be back in the lineup on Friday for the series opener against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays after a scheduled day off on Thursday. Tommy Edman will start at the 6 on Wednesday and will face Mariners right-hander Logan Gilbert. Rojas brings very little power (three homers this year) to the table and is only really a fantasy option in NL-only leagues for middle-infield insurance, but he has hit a cool .283 (65-for-230) and gives the Dodgers the best defensive option at shortstop. The Venezuelan superior glove is the reason the Dodgers moved Mookie Betts back to the outfield after he returned from his fractured hand.

Tyler Glasnow Hasn't Resumed Throwing

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Tyler Glasnow (elbow) has not started throwing again, according to manager Dave Roberts, and will likely need more than the minimum 15 days he was initially expected to miss when he landed on the injured list. Roberts said the Dodgers aren't concerned at this point and just want Glasnow to "listen to his body" for now. Fantasy managers now cannot count on Glasnow coming off the IL when he's eligible on Aug. 31, but it sounds like the Dodgers expected him back at some point in September. The 30-year-old is tied for the third-best strikeout rate (32.2%) in baseball this year, which makes him worth holding onto in all fantasy leagues, but he may only have a handful of starts left to make an impact, depending on when he's activated and makes his next start. In his first year in LA, Glasnow is 9-6 with a 3.49 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 168 K's in 134 innings over 22 starts.

Byron Buxton Could Return When First Eligible

There still isn't an exact timeline for Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton's (hip) return, but he will be evaluated when the team returns home for their off-day on Thursday. However, head athletic trainer Nick Paparesta did not rule out the possibility of Buxton returning on Friday for Minnesota's series opener at Target Field against the visiting St. Louis Cardinals following the minimum 10-day stint on the injured list. Buxton did some running for the first time on Tuesday, having already been hitting, throwing, and doing outfield work since going down with right hip inflammation. The 30-year-old speedy slugger is slashing a resurgent .275/.334/.528 with 16 home runs, 23 doubles, 54 runs scored, and six stolen bases in 305 at-bats for the Twins this year and needs to be stashed in all fantasy leagues.
