San Francisco Giants catcher Patrick Bailey (side) was a late scratch from Monday's series opener at Oracle Park against the Chicago White Sox with right-side tightness, but he described the soreness as "very, very minor," and said it was more of a precautionary scratch. However, Bailey is likely to sit out on Tuesday as well. Veteran Curt Casali replaced Bailey on Monday, although the Giants could call up Jakson Reetz from Triple-A Sacramento if they want more catching depth on Tuesday. Bailey has been mired in a terrible slump in recent weeks, going just 5-for-66 (.076) in 18 games since July 28, so perhaps it will be good for him to take at least a couple days off. He said he felt his side tighten up after coming out to take early swings on Monday. The 25-year-old switch-hitting backstop is hitting .233 (76-for-326) overall this year with seven homers and 38 RBI.

San Francisco Giants right-hander Tristan Beck (arm) started a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento on Aug. 8 and gave up five earned runs over nine innings (5.00 ERA) in his first three starts. Beck is scheduled to throw four or five frames in his next outing for the River Cats on Friday, Aug. 23. He felt his hand go cold after some bullpens early in spring training, prompting him to be evaluated by team doctors on Feb. 27. Beck was eventually diagnosed with an aneurysm and he was moved to the 60-day injured list on March 3 while undergoing surgery the next day to address the issue. The 28-year-old gave up four earned runs while striking out four and walking none in three innings in his most recent start for Sacramento on Sunday. Beck won't be guaranteed a rotation spot in San Fran down the stretch and should be avoided in fantasy the rest of the way.

San Francisco Giants left-handed pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt (foot), who was placed on the seven-day minor-league injured list on July 24 with a sore foot, began a rehab assignment with Single-A San Joe on Aug. 13, striking out six over five scoreless innings in his first two starts. The 23-year-old, who is considered by MLB Pipeline to be the team's No. 4 prospect, has struggled in his first year with Triple-A Sacramento, posting a 5.84 ERA in 19 starts, although he does have 102 strikeouts in 77 innings. He made his last start for the River Cats on July 13 and gave up three runs over four innings with seven strikeouts. Whisenhunt could rejoin Sacramento's starting rotation soon to close out the year. The 6-foot-3, 209-pounder's plus-plus changeup helps him get a lot of swings and misses, but he's going to need to show better command and control if he's going to have extended success in what is expected to be his major-league debut in 2025.

San Francisco Giants catcher Tom Murphy (knee) has continued his rehab after feeling a pop in his knee after trying to block a wild pitch back on May 4. Murphy started hitting and running progressions on Saturday, and manager Bob Melvin said the hope is that the team will have Murphy back in September. "It's taken him some time," Melvin said. "He doesn't feel it hitting, he doesn't feel it throwing, it's just getting down in the catcher's position that's he's having some trouble with it. He's pretty frustrated with it, too." The 33-year-old was put on the 10-day injured list on May 5, and an MRI exam showed a Grade 1-2 sprain. He was moved to the 60-day IL on May 15 and received a platelet-rich plasma injection on July 30. Murphy hit .118 with a homer in his first 13 games with the Giants and will likely serve as Patrick Bailey's backup when/if he returns to the big-league roster next month.

San Francisco Giants left-hander Tyler Matzek (elbow), who was acquired from the Atlanta Braves as part of the Jorge Soler trade on July 29, started a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento on Aug. 13, giving up two runs (one earned) over one inning. Matzek is scheduled to make his next rehab appearance for the River Cats on Tuesday. The veteran left-handed reliever had a 9.90 ERA and produced some concerning hard-hit metrics over 11 appearances for the Braves this year, but he had a 3.50 ERA over 42 outings in 2022 before having Tommy John surgery in October of that year. The 33-year-old could make his debut with the Giants in early September, but they're likely to ease him in via a low-leverage relief role down the stretch.
