Julio Rodriguez Takes On-Field Batting Practice

Seattle Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez (ankle) took on-field batting practice ahead of Tuesday's series opener against the visiting Detroit Tigers. For the second time on Seattle's nine-game homestand, and following Monday's off-day, Rodriguez was on the field taking swings during pregame activities The club still doesn't have a definitive timetable on when he might be activated from the 10-day injured list, where he's resided since July 23, and there is also a possibility that Rodriguez will need a minor-league rehab assignment before rejoining the Mariners. Being able to run without any issues will be a more important checkpoint for the 23-year-old superstar center fielder, who is recovering from a high right ankle sprain. In the meantime, Victor Robles is slashing .297/.378/.432 with three home runs, six doubles, eight RBI, and 14 stolen bases in 111 at-bats in Seattle and is worth a look for fantasy managers in deep leagues.

Liam Hendriks Advances To Live Batting Practice

Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Liam Hendriks (elbow) threw his first live batting practice session on the mound ahead of Tuesday's game against the hosting Kansas City Royals. Hendriks threw 15 pitches, both fastballs and sliders, in the first of three or four scheduled live BP sessions, with the next being scheduled for Saturday if he bounces back well. The 35-year-old three-time All-Star has not pitched in the big leagues since undergoing Tommy John surgery a season ago, and he still is targeting a September return to the major leagues if his live sessions and eventual minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester go well. With that said, Hendriks is running out of time to be a factor for fantasy managers in 2024, and his impact as a setup man ahead of closer Kenley Jansen will likely be felt more if the Red Sox advance to the postseason in October.

Clarke Schmidt Nearing Rehab Assignment

New York Yankees starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt (lat) threw a live batting practice session ahead of Tuesday's postponed game against the visiting Los Angeles Angels. Schmidt threw 20 pitches on Tuesday and will toss another live session on Saturday, indicating that he could go on a minor-league rehab assignment soon thereafter. The 28-year-old upstart right-hander hopes to be back on the mound for the Yankees sometime before the end of August, but his absence could extend into early September, depending on when his assignment begins. When he strained his lat, Schmidt was one of the Yankees' top pitchers while going 5-3 with a 2.52 ERA with 67 strikeouts in 60 2/3 innings. Upon his return, New York could opt to employ a six-man rotation or move the struggling Nestor Cortes Jr. to the bullpen.

Drew Rasmussen On Verge Of Returning To Rays

Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Drew Rasmussen (elbow) was spotted with the team in St. Louis for their series opener against the hosting Cardinals on Tuesday, and he's expected to be activated ahead of Wednesday's game. Rasmussen is set to return to the Rays as a long reliever to manage his workload, which should build him up toward getting back into Tampa Bay's rotation next year. He will be making shorter appearances on less rest, allowing him to return to the big leagues from last year's right flexor strain quicker than he would be able to as a starter. Unless the 29-year-old righty draws spot starts here and there, Rasmussen won't feature an abundance of fantasy upside, despite putting up a 2.62 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 47 strikeouts and 11 walks over 44 2/3 innings in 2023.

Grayson Rodriguez Experiencing Lat Discomfort

Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Grayson Rodriguez (lat) was scratched from Tuesday's start against the division-rival Toronto Blue Jays with right lat/teres discomfort. Rodriguez threw a pregame bullpen at Rogers Centre ahead of Tuesday's game against Toronto, but he was scratched roughly 10 minutes before the first pitch, much to the dismay of fantasy managers. In his place, right-hander Albert Suarez started for the O's against the Jays. Rodriguez boasts a 3.86 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and 130:36 K:BB to go with a 13-4 record in 116 2/3 innings over 20 starts for Baltimore this year, and this sounds like an issue that could very well lead to a stay on the injured list. For the time being, the 24-year-old former top prospect can be considered day-to-day until he's re-evaluated ahead of his next scheduled start, which tentatively lines up for Sunday's matchup at home against the division-rival Tampa Bay Rays.
