Reese Olson Exits After Taking Comebacker To Hip

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Reese Olson (hip) left Monday's start against the division-rival Kansas City Royals during the third inning after taking a 101.8 mph line drive from Michael Massey off his right hip. It's worth noting that Olson attempted to stay in the game, but Beau Brieske ultimately relieved him after the club opted to pull him from the contest. Olson allowed one earned run on five hits and one walk with two strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings before departing. The Tigers should provide an official diagnosis sometime following Monday's game, and the 24-year-old right-hander should be viewed as day-to-day until then. Although Olson is winless through nine starts this year, he holds an impressive 2.16 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and 43:16 K:BB over 50 frames. His next start tentatively lines up for Saturday, when Detroit hosts the Toronto Blue Jays.UPDATE: Olson was diagnosed with a right-hip contusion.

Tarik Skubal Strikes Out Six Over Six Shutout Innings

Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal tossed six innings of shutout ball while striking out six and allowing just one hit in a 13-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday. Skubal was efficient in the outing, needing just 74 pitches to cruise through his six innings of work. He didn't allow a baserunner until the fifth inning when he gave up a double to Randal Grichuck. Skubal has been dominant in 2024, posting a 6-0 record, 1.80 ERA, 0.78 WHIP, and 66 strikeouts over 55 innings of work. Skubal has to be considered a must-start in fantasy moving forward. His next start is scheduled to come against the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday.

Tigers Don't Plan On Benching Javier Baez

The Detroit Tigers currently have no plans to bench struggling shortstop Javier Baez. "He's going to play, a lot," manager A.J. Hinch said. The two-time All-Star in his prime, Baez is hitting just .167 with a homer, five walks and 27 strikeouts in 37 games this year. The 31-year-old has been worth minus-one defensive runs saved at shortstop and has been the worst player in baseball when his offensive struggles are added in. His OPS has dropped in each of his three seasons in Detroit, from .671 in 2022 to .593 last year and to .422 so far in 2024. The 11-year MLB veteran had 31 extra-base hits in 136 games last year but has just five extra-base hits this year, putting him on pace for 18 extra-base hits in 2024. The return of Gio Urshela from the injured list could take some starts away from Baez at shortstop. Until Baez shows some signs of turning it around, he's basically unplayable in all fantasy formats.

Reese Olson's Stellar Outing Ends With No-Decision

Detroit Tigers starting pitcherReese Olsonreceived a no-decision Tuesday night after tossing eight shutout innings against the Marlins in a 1-0 loss. The game went scoreless into extra innings, but not before Olson shut down the Marlins for no runs, six strikeouts, no walks, and only three hits allowed. Despite the 0-4 record, the right-hander has been great this season, sporting a 2.09 ERA with a 0.99 WHIP. He's logged six straight starts of allowing two runs or less after giving up six runs in four innings to the Pittsburgh Pirates in early April. Olson's next start comes against the Kansas City Royals. The young pitcher dominated the Royals in his last meeting for seven one-run innings, including eight strikeouts.

Kenta Maeda To Throw A Bullpen On Wednesday

Detroit Tigers right-hander Kenta Maeda (illness) is expected to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday. It's good to see that Maeda is feeling better after he was placed on the 15-day injured list last Saturday due to a viral illness. The 36-year-old veteran might need to throw a few bullpen sessions before he's cleared for a short minor-league rehab assignment. Fantasy baseball managers in mixed leagues can probably leave Maeda to the waiver wire, as he started the year 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA (6.53 FIP) and 1.40 WHIP with 10 walks and 23 strikeouts in 30 2/3 innings over seven starts. Maeda typically doesn't overpower hitters but relies on pinpoint control. He has a career 26.4% strikeout rate and has little fantasy upside at this stage of his career.
