How many times have you looked at your fantasy team and realized it’s one of the best teams you have ever drafted? How many conversations have you had with friends or family about their fantasy team from a different league you are not in? I have always wanted a way to compete against my friends and prove who has the best overall team. Well, now? We can.

Even better, you get to set up these competitions on your own time, so waiting on a league schedule or calendar to challenge your friends and family to fantasy competitions is over!

Take a look at this monster I drafted in the NFBC RotoWire Online Championship back in early March. It’s a standard 5×5 roto draft with 30 rounds and a 12-team league. This is the team after five weeks of FAAB (free-agent bidding), noted below.

Starting Lineup

Pitchers

Bench

This was a rare, lucky draft in the NFBC Online Championship where I was not only able to secure Ronald Acuña Jr. with the sixth-overall pick (first round) but also Shohei Ohtani in the middle of the second and Spencer Strider in the third. Acuna Jr. rarely made it past Pick 3 in March drafts, Ohtani was almost always a first-rounder, and even Strider popped into the end of the first round. One would think a team like this would be off and running, right? Wrong. This squad has been hard-pressed to earn saves, has been hit with a myriad of injuries and is stuck between third and fifth place through the first month of the season.

This squad obviously has promise. Raisel Iglesias is expected back in about a week. He’d be a much-needed addition to a team that essentially only has one closer (Fairbanks). Reynaldo López has a few saves, but I missed most of them by having him on my bench, and he’s also crushed the ratios with an ERA near 8.00. Losing Corey Seager was a big blow, and the hope is that he can return sometime in late May or early June. I’ve also been waiting quite some time for Carlos Rodón, who is about a month away from returning.

On the plus side, this team has compiled some early-season bloomers who were late-round picks including Yandy Díaz and Jarred Kelenic. The squad is in a good place with stolen bases between Acuna, Kwan, Ruiz, and even Ohtani has been stealing a few this past week. I just got Haniger back after missing most of the season, and hopefully he can contribute with some homers, runs and RBIs.

Back to the negative, the pitching has been getting smashed outside of Strider. We saw Luzardo have back-to-back rough outings and good ol’ Syndergaard was hung for 7 ER on Tuesday. Neither of the catchers (Kirk, Contreras) have really got going, and I’m still waiting for Jimenez to start mashing. Hopefully that happens before he hits the IL.

Overall, this is a team with infinite upside but carries a lot of risk and volatility. It’s the perfect team for someone with a strong roster to compete against head-to-head via Bettle.
