Bettings

This week’s golf best bets will be coming from Palmetto Championship and the Scandinavian Mixed Open. As always, one of the main goals of this article is to expose other golf betting opportunities outside of the PGA Tour. Markets are smaller and less popular, which often provides the largest edges (T20s/10s/matchups).

I strongly encourage you, if you’re a golf fan, to start paying attention to the European Tour, Korn Ferry Tour and LPGA Tour. You will benefit when golfers make the jump to the PGA Tour or in majors when the fields are mixed. The LPGA and European tours have some of the better head-to-head action each week as well. And as they grow, the offerings should grow as well.

Palmetto Championship | Harris English +110 vs. Sungjae Im – FanDuel

This is a matchup between a couple of golfers who have been solid long term but have been struggling of late. Neither has been striking the ball extremely well with their irons, but at least Sungjae has continued to stay consistent with his driver. On the other hand, Harris has kept his short game going, which is always more up in the air than ball-striking. However, historically he has had a sharp short game, so I don’t think it’s quite the knock as it would be if he was just sun-running with his putter over the course of a few weeks.

I mix in form and long-term skill to varying degrees, and I made English the very slight favorite. It honestly made me question how much of his long-term numbers are affecting the rating, but Sungjae not playing well is a large factor as well. It’s not a giant edge but enough to bet and hopefully English can start to regain the form he had for 12 months prior to winning in January.

Scandinavian Mixed Open | Matthew Southgate +4000 to WIN – BetMGM

This week’s Euro Tour event, like the name implies, is a mix of Euro Tour men and Ladies Euro Tour golfers competing for the same trophy and prize money. The men will be playing the course at 7,100 yards while the women will be playing it at 6,100. There was a tournament play in Australia with the same concept earlier this year, and I think it’s a great idea.

I will be betting on Southgate to take home the trophy. He has yet to lift a trophy in his professional play, dating back to 2011 and last week I was quite scared he was going to catch Armitage and sabotage my ticket. Alas, he hit his tee shot on 18 into the water and then decided to not attempt to go for the green, essentially waving the white flag at victory. It’s tough as a bettor seeing that and then backing him the next week but he’s been playing extraordinarily well, and I don’t want to pass up what appears to be a decent number. Over the last 5 weeks, his lowest average ball striking was 0.92 strokes per round back at Tenerife, and the last two weeks he’s been averaging over 2 strokes per round. It feels so close and although it was hard for me to come up with exact numbers whit the women mixed in, I’ll take a shot on the 40/1 this week and ride the exceptional recent form.
