Week 18 Sunday Night Football First TD Bets

Jordan Addison (+1100, DraftKings, BetMGM

Justin Jefferson is the best receiver on the Vikings, if not the best in the league, but Addison is one of the better second wideouts. He’s got 62 catches for 875 yards this season, and most importantly, he has scored nine touchdowns. Teams are locked in on Jefferson, which gives Addison plenty of space to operate, and Sam Darnold knows to look for him. The Lions are bottom five in the league at defending receivers. Maybe that means Jefferson scores first, but at this price, I’d much rather bet on Addison scoring six before anyone else.

Sam LaPorta (+1200, FanDuel, DraftKings)

LaPorta had a slow start to the year with just 32 targets in the first 10 weeks of the season. He’s seen 44 targets over the last six weeks, which puts him just barely behind Jameson Williams as the team’s third receiving option. More importantly, LaPorta has seen 11 red-zone targets over the past six weeks, second most on the team during the period. If the Lions score on a long throw, it will all but certainly be Williams or Amon-Ra St. Brown, but the Vikings have been good at keeping opponents from breaking off big plays. It’s much more likely that Detroit will drive methodically down the field and score from inside the red zone, which is the perfect environment for LaPorta to score. At +1200 or better, I’ll bet that not only does he score, but that he scores the first touchdown of the game.

Jalen Nailor (+2700, Caesars, FanDuel)

As I mentioned, Detroit has not been good at defending wide receivers, and that could mean a big day for Justin Jefferson, but I’m looking further down the depth chart. Nailor has locked up the third spot in Minnesota’s receiving corps and has taken advantage of the chance to play against opponents’ backup cornerbacks. He scored the first touchdown for the Vikings last week, and I think he has a better chance than the market estimates to do it again this week. At +2700 or better, I’ll bet he gets across the goal line before any other player.

Sam Darnold (+3300, FanDuel, BetMGM)

The Vikings tend to lean on their running backs when they get into the red zone, but the Lions know that and will be ready. Detroit has been great at stopping opposing running backs, which means Darnold might have to run the ball in himself. He’s an underrated athlete, and in a must-win game, he could even get a chance for a quarterback sneak from the one-yard line. Minnesota has no reason to hold anything back and Darnold knows that. At +3300 or better, it’s worth a wager that Darnold scores the first touchdown on a sneak or even a run off a broken play.

Kalif Raymond (+4000, BetRivers, Caesars)

Raymond was activated from the injured reserve and will play his first game since November 24. He is one of the more dynamic talents on a team loaded with dynamic talents. He’s a receiver, a runner and even a kick returner. Ben Johnson, Detroit’s offensive coordinator, loves to use Raymond in special plays, and I think he has had at least a few of those burning a hole in his pocket for the last few weeks. At +4000 or better, I’m willing to wager that Raymond celebrates his return to the field by scoring the first six-pointer of the night.

Brock Wright (+10000, FanDuel)

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again, right? Well, I’m not sure that adage applies to betting, but I continue to show value on Wright to score, and score first, despite him scoring just twice (both times in blowout wins). Wright has played the fifth-most snaps of wide receivers and tight ends. That hasn’t earned him many targets, but the ones he has seen have been high-value targets. He’s gotten just 16 targets, but 25% of those are red-zone targets. Teams know Wright is in to block, which makes him a dangerous target near the goal line. At +10000 or better, I think it’s worth a bet that Wright gets the first touchdown of the game while defenders are focused on other players.
