StatHero NBA picks 5/5

One of my favorite things in DFS is the opportunity to try a new outlet. Diversifying where you play is key to building a bankroll. That type of opportunity is exactly what we get today with our new friends at StatHero.

In short, StatHero offers fantasy players two ways to play. A revolutionary DFS sportsbook, and a fantasy-based survivor pool. The app doesn’t pit players against players, you’re always playing against StatHero. For a more in-depth look at what StatHero has to offer, check out this app review from FTN’s Tyler Loechner and Chris Meaney’s new video breakdown.

Stat Hero NBA picks for tonight

Player prices will fluctuate throughout the day with news, so prices in this article may not reflect what you see on the app when you’re making your lineup in the Sportsbook. Make sure you join the #StatHero channel in the FTN Daily Discord. It’s free and you can always tag me with any questions you may have leading up to lock.

Here’s a look at my favorite plays for Wednesday’s slate on StatHero.

StatHero MVP picks (normally $11k and above)

Your MVP will score 1.5x the fantasy points. I like this slate a lot. Working within the salary cap is obviously a factor, and there’s more than the normal guys on this slate that I would consider at MVP. It looks like StatHero is going to roll out Nikola Jokic or Russell Westbrook in the MVP spot (not surprised if some Giannis Antetokounmpo MVP lineups are posted before lock either), and if you’ve kept up with any of these articles you know I’m not opposed to matching their MVP and getting different in the flex spots. I’m fine with that strategy again tonight but we also have the ability tonight to roster a cheaper MVP and maybe stack up some studs alongside them. My priorities here are Domantas Sabonis and Jayson Tatum. Both are sitting nearly $3k cheaper than Jokic and Westbrook and have upsides close enough to those two that they’re viable MVPs for me. Secondary picks would be Karl-Anthony Towns and Damian Lillard.

Flex picks ($6.5-$11k)

The top of this range is somewhat of a mixed bag. Nobody jumps out immediately, but there are plenty of acceptable options. Devin Booker against the Hawks could certainly hit an upside, and if you don’t roster Lillard, CJ McCollum is a decent add to your roster. In the same vein you can roster Khris Middleton against the Wizards if you don’t have Giannis. After those guys, I’m really looking to the next tier of players with upside for their prices like Jrue Holiday, who feels too cheap for the matchup, and Buddy Hield is much too inexpensive for the increased opportunity he will see with so many teammates sidelined. With Christian Wood doubtful, Kelly Olynyk is a great minutes play for the price and has been acceptably productive lately. Delon Wright is near the bottom of this tier and we saw what he can do with the increased minutes and usage Tuesday night when he almost posted a 5×5. Cole Anthony isn’t bad down here, but we saw him lose minutes last time out when the Magic bench players got hot. Not too worried about it, but I’d prefer Wright. Last guy in this range is TJ McConnell, and only if Malcolm Brogdon (currently questionable) is out.

StatHero sleeper/value picks ($6.4k and below)

My goodness are there some smash plays down here. Keep in mind that these could fluctuate as we get closer to lock, but as it looks right now, we can build some monster lineups. Kevin Porter is down here, and it makes zero sense. The Rockets are extremely short on bodies and with Wood doubtful it only increases Porter’s upside even in a tough matchup. Mo Bamba also stands out with Wendell Carter questionable. His teammates Moritz Wagner and RJ Hampton got massive minutes last time out and are in play here as cheap value. Lastly, Kenyon Martin (affectionately nicknamed Junior-Junior here at FTN) is a great value with Houston’s Wood doubtful on an already shorthanded team.
