Tipico Tips: Rocket Mortgage Classic bets

This week’s PGA Tour event, the Rocket Mortgage Classic, is taking place at the Detroit Golf Club in Detroit, MI. This will be the third iteration of this event with the previous winners being Nate Lashley in 2019 and Bryson DeChambeau in 2020.

Detroit Golf Club sets up as a Par 72, 7,342 yards but it plays quite easy.  The layout provides a lot of short par 4’s, with a bulk of the yardage being made up on the four par 5s.  The course has appeared to neutralize distance a bit for the field, giving those who are shorter off the tee a better chance to compete this week.

Patrick Reed +125 vs. Bryson DeChambeau (tie loss)

I know what you may be thinking if you watched this tournament last year, and no I am not crazy. What Bryson did was wild, and I believe it was truly his coming out party, showing off what his newfound power could do, but it’s not the true answer at this course. He also put the lights out while he was smashing his way through Detroit. A majority of the field took the route of irons and putting to get on the leaderboard, and I do not think Reed’s skill and recent form deserve to be this big of a dog to Bryson. I may be one of the few, but I actually rate Reed as the top in my performance ratings this week, slightly ahead of Bryson. He is one of the most balanced golfers in the world, gaining strokes across all of the categories and should serve him well. Bryson may have not needed a strong iron game here last year but that will mean he will once again need a perfect driving week. I’ll take the plus money on Reed at this point in time, at a course that should benefit him more than Bryson.

Jason Kokrak | +140 Top 20

Jason Kokrak is the ball striker who many golf analysts speak of when they say things like, “can you imagine what would happen if this guy learned to putt?” Kokrak found something that helped his stroke, and it has catapulted him to two victories during the 2021 PGA Season and consistently high finishes. Although he cooled off a little after his first victory, the form has returned, including a victory just two tournaments ago for him. Although not a complete wizard on the greens, he is vastly improved and has shown the ability to have huge weeks on the greens while his overall skill is propped up by his ball striking. He is one of the better golfers in the field this week and I made him closer to +130.
