Martin Perez Expected To Make San Diego Debut On Saturday

San Diego starting pitcher Martin Perez is expected to debut with his new team on Saturday evening as the Padres play host to the Colorado Rockies. The southpaw carried a poor 5.20 ERA, 1.65 WHIP, and a 32:63 BB:K ratio across 83 innings in the Steel City earlier this season. The 33-year-old currently sits with a high 43.3% hard-hit rate and 8.7% barrel rate, which suggests these struggles could continue in the second half. Perez currently sits as the fifth man in the San Diego rotation but may shift to a long relief role once Joe Musgrove (elbow) returns from the 60-day IL. Perez could be a sneaky play in DFS, however, as he faces the Colorado Rockies, who hold a team .234 AVG, which is the fifth-worst mark against left-handed pitching this season.

Martin Perez Traded To The Padres

Earlier on Tuesday, the San Diego Padres acquired veteran left-hander Martin Perez from the Pittsburgh Pirates, according to a source. It's unclear what the Padres sent the Pirates in return for Perez. The 33-year-old southpaw should immediately jump into San Diego's starting rotation as they wait to get both Joe Musgrove (elbow) and Yu Darvish (elbow, personal) back. Perez will have a better offense backing him in San Diego, but it's probably not going to make up for deficiencies on the mound. The soft-tossing Venezuelan hurler went 2-5 for the Pirates in 16 starts this year, sporting a 5.20 ERA and 1.65 WHIP with only 63 strikeouts in 83 innings pitched. And in five starts since coming off the injured list on in late June, he's allowed 18 earned runs with 13 walks and 17 K's in 25 2/3 innings. At best, Perez is a matchup-based streaming option in NL-only leagues.

Martin Perez Impressive In No-Decision

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Martin Perez put together an impressive outing in Thursday's no-decision versus the St. Louis Cardinals. Perez went 7 1/3 innings and allowed six hits, one run (zero earned), one walk and struck out two in his second start since returning from a groin injury. For the season, the veteran carries a 4.74 ERA with a 1.54 WHIP and 6.82 K/9. At this point in his career, managers know what to expect from Perez and he makes for a better real-life pitcher than fantasy member. Perez will look to carry the momentum from Thursday's start into his next contest versus the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday, a contest that should keep him on the waiver wire.
