Reports: Aaron Jones does not get franchise tagged

Share

The Green Bay Packers declined to place the franchise tag on RB Aaron Jones before Tuesday’s deadline, leaving the back available to test free agency, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Packers did not place their franchise tag on RB Aaron Jones, per source. Jones is headed to free agency, though Green Bay is attempting to re-sign him before he gets there.

Jones hits free agency at 26 years old, coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in Green Bay, including a PPR RB2 finish in 2019 when he scored 19 times. He was the Packers’ fifth-round pick in 2017 and made the 2020 Pro Bowl.

Jones enters free agency along with Green Bay backfield-mate Jamaal Williams. If neither returns to the Packers, the team will have A.J. Dillon, the 2020 second-round pick, in line to be the No. 1 back. Dillon had a largely quiet 2020 season, save for a 124-yard, 2-TD outburst in Week 16.
