Saquon Barkley has exploded into the MVP discussion on the heels of his third straight 100-yard performance, this time out-rushing Derrick Henry on the way to the Eagles’ most impressive win of their now 10-2 season. He is on pace to break the single-season rushing record (albeit in 17 games) and his dominant second halves have earned him the affectionate nickname “The Closer” in Philly. His inclusion in the MVP discussion is as polarizing as it gets – most people either believe he’s the MVP or that as a running back, he doesn’t even belong in the discussion. So let’s zoom out a bit and ask… is Saquon Barkley even the MVP of his own team?
In short, the answer is that it’s hard to tell, through no fault of his own. The Eagles’ offense is carefully crafted, such that each individual piece helps get the most out of the rest. A.J. Brown’s presence and the dominant offensive line make Barkley’s life easier than most running backs’. Similarly, the dramatically improved defense is also putting Barkley in the exact game scripts he needs to chase down Eric Dickerson’s record. But Barkley is also giving A.J. Brown opportunities he didn’t have last season and Jalen Hurts is taking full advantage. And of course, there’s Jalen Hurts Whether connecting with receivers down field or baiting linebackers to fill the wrong hole with his threat to run, Hurts is looking more like the guy we saw in his MVP-caliber 2022 season with each passing week.
