Has the Anthony Richardson Hype Gone Too Far?

Share

Josh Allen’s and Jalen Hurts’ consecutive top three fantasy seasons have cemented the modern wisdom that running quarterbacks are the best fantasy bets, and you can see that wisdom in the market. The public is drafting the oft-injured Kyler Murray in the top seven at the position, No. 2 pick Jayden Daniels ahead of No. 1 pick Caleb Williams, and presumed Week 1 backup Justin Fields ahead of eight different starters. And with the high ceilings their dual-threat contemporaries have shown, it’s easy to justify even those bullish average draft positions.

The optimism for Anthony Richardson is at another level — his 57th overall ADP has him closer to the traditional top tier of Allen (37th), Hurts (41st), Patrick Mahomes (44th) and Lamar Jackson (48th) than to C.J. Stroud (71st) at the start of the tier behind him. And there is a case that Richardson justifies it, as well. He enjoyed a dream start to his rookie fantasy season, throwing three and running for four touchdowns even while missing snaps in his first three professional starts. A shoulder injury ended his season one week later, but Richardson teased a higher ceiling than anyone. His 0.71 fantasy points per dropback led the position in 2023.
