The Philadelphia Phillies optioned rookie right-hander Tyler Phillips to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Wednesday and selected the contract of right-hander Nick Nelson from Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move. To make room on the 40-man roster, right-hander Michael Rucker was designated for assignment. The move comes after Phillips surrendered six earned runs on eight hits in just two-thirds of an inning on Tuesday in a start against the Toronto Blue Jays. It's been a tough go for Phillips in his first taste of the majors in 2024, as he now has a 6.87 ERA (5.58 FIP) and 1.42 WHIP while striking out 28 and walking seven in 36 2/3 innings over his eight appearances (seven starts). It's unclear who might take his spot in the starting rotation, but it could be either Taijuan Walker or Kolby Allard.

His next start lines up with the Mariners next Friday on the road, the team that strikes out the most in all of baseball, so he could be a solid waiver addition for fantasy teams looking for some short-term pitching help.
