Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Ryne Nelson (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day injured list on Saturday with right shoulder inflammation, according to Jesse Friedman of PHNX Sports. The 26-year-old has been in a bit of a slump across his past four starts, which may have been due to this injury. In his most recent outing, the right-hander allowed five runs, which was the most he has given up in a start since June. Prior to this rough stretch, Nelson held a stellar 2.73 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP from July 2 to August 16. While Nelson could still return before the end of the regular season, the Diamondbacks may opt to give him additional rest as they currently hold a wild card spot. As a result, fantasy managers should expect southpaw Jordan Montgomery or prospect Yilber Diaz to claim the open spot in the rotation.
Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Ryne Nelson will get the starting nod against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday. Manager Torey Lovullo said earlier in the week that Nelson would be available out of the bullpen. The D-Backs didn't use him out of the pen which made him available to pitch in this game. Nelson allowed two earned runs while striking out nine batters over 7 1/3 innings of work during his latest start. He'll be a decent streaming option on Friday, but Nelson is likely headed to the bullpen after this start. Lovullo said the team plans to go down to a five-man rotation which probably means Nelson is the odd man out.
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Ryne Nelson was dominant on Friday as he struck out nine batters in Arizona's 5-2 win over the Chicago Cubs. Nine strikeouts marks a career high for Nelson, who picked up the win and improved his record to 7-6 on the season. The career day was a great sight to see for the 26-year-old, whose rocky start to the season has turned around over his last four games. Nelson's ERA now sits at 4.78 on the season, which was all the way up to 7.06 in the middle of May. Fantasy managers in deeper leagues looking for help in the starting pitching department may want to take a look at Nelson. His next scheduled start will be a tough one on Wednesday when Arizona travels to Kansas City to face the Royals.
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Ryne Nelson was surprisingly solid during Sunday's outing against the San Diego Padres. The right-hander allowed one run on three hits over 6 2/3 innings in the win. It hasn't been a great year for Nelson but he has looked better lately. He struck out five batters while only walking one batter on Sunday. This in now back-to-back strong outings for Nelson against fairly good offenses. We'll see if he can keep it going against the Toronto Blue Jays during his next start.
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Ryne Nelson put together a very nice start on Thursday, earning his fifth win in a 5-2 victory over the Washington Nationals. Nelson tossed seven strong innings, allowing just three hits with two strikeouts and zero walks. The swing-and-miss stuff wasn't there in this one, but it is his second consecutive start of six-plus innings with two or fewer runs allowed. The 26-year-old still has poor numbers for the season and shouldn't be rostered in many leagues, but he could make for a decent streamer if the matchup is right. He is lined up to face the Minnesota Twins next week, so he won't hold much streamer appeal for that one.
