Baltimore Orioles third base prospect Coby Mayo went 3-for-5 with a home run during their victory over the Durham Bulls on Sunday. After going 0-for-7 at the plate during his first two games of the season, Mayo was able to break his slump on Sunday. In this contest, Mayo tallied six total bases, brought in two runs, and scored one himself. The 23-year-old was competing for a spot on the Opening Day roster but was unable to find his footing during camp. Fantasy managers should pay close attention to his progression at Triple-A, as he should be in the mix to return to the big leagues early in the campaign. Last season, Mayo posted a .098/.196/.098 slash line across his first 17 games in the majors. However, at Triple-A, he posted an elite .287/.364/.562 slash line. If he continues to hit for power at Triple-A, he will be worth stashing in deeper formats.

Baltimore Orioles third base prospect Coby Mayo was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. Mayo was competing for a spot on the Opening Day roster but will instead continue his development at the top level of the minor leagues. During camp, Mayo held an underwhelming .190 AVG with a poor 13:2 BB:K. The 23-year-old made his MLB debut last season and posted a .098/.196/.098 line across 17 contests. During this stretch, he tallied just four hits and held a 4:22 BB:K. However, Mayo flashed elite upside at the Triple-A level as he held a .287/.364/.562 slash line with 23 doubles and 22 home runs across 89 contests last season. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his development with Norfolk, as he will likely be in the mix to return to the majors later in the summer.

Baltimore Orioles third base prospect Coby Mayo (hand) is OK after being hit by a pitch on his right hand in Monday's Grapefruit League contest against the division-rival Boston Red Sox, according to manager Brandon Hyde. The skipper added that Mayo will be checked out on Tuesday, but he expects everything to be OK. It's great news for Mayo, who was in a lot of pain after being hit by a 96 mph sinker. It's possible that the 23-year-old could be back in spring training action by Wednesday. The former fourth-rounder in 2020 came into Monday's spring game hitting just .180 (7-for-39) with three doubles, three RBI, eight runs scored and 13 strikeouts in 42 plate appearances over 16 games. Mayo made his big-league debut in 2024 but struggled by going 4-for-41 (.098) with four walks and 22 K's in 17 games played. He's going to begin the year at Triple-A Norfolk but should once again see time in the majors at some point, likely as a backup.

Baltimore Orioles third base prospect Coby Mayo has gone 1-for-20 at the plate in the Grapefruit League. Mayo's lone hit did not go for extra bases. The former fourth-round pick is considered one of the top third base prospects in the sport. Last season, Mayo flashed immense power upside in the minor leagues. In 89 games with Triple-A Norfolk, Mayo posted a .289/.364/.562 slash line with 23 doubles and 22 long balls. He held a 40:97 BB:K ratio and added four swiped bags. However, during his brief taste of the majors, Mayo took a significant step back. In 17 contests, Mayo tallied just four hits and held a .098/.190/.098 slash line. He generated a low .170x BA with a 21.2 percent hard-hit rate. If Mayo continues to struggle during camp, he may begin the season at the Triple-A level. When he does return to the majors, he will likely compete for starts as a designated hitter as Jordan Westburg should see most of the opportunities at the hot corner.

Baltimore Orioles general manager Mike Elias said the team is expecting big things from third base prospect Coby Mayo in 2025. "I think the fact that he got his debut out of the way is a really good thing," Elias said. "I think that's big for young hitters these days. He's somebody that we think is poised to be a huge contributor this year, so we'll give him a strong look and every opportunity." The 23-year-old hit .287 with 23 doubles, 22 homers, 67 RBI and a .925 OPS in 89 games in the International League in the minors, but he went 4-for-41 (.098) with no homers and 22 strikeouts in 46 trips to the plate in his first 17 big-league games late in the year. He's working to improve his glove this spring and will stay at the corners in camp, but he's not guaranteed an Opening Day roster spot, and his future in Baltimore could be at first base. After his struggles with the O's last year, Mayo is a perfect buy-low candidate in dynasty leagues.
