Wenceel Perez On His Way To The Big Leagues

MLive's Evan Woodbery writes that El Varon Sports is reporting that Detroit Tigers infielder/outfielder Wenceel Perez is being promoted to the big leagues on Monday. Perez also shared the news on his Instagram story on Monday morning. The club's No. 20 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, has been playing the outfield in eight games with Triple-A Toledo to start the 2024 season and had gone 7-for-33 (.212) with a home run, five RBI, four stolen bases and eight runs scored in his first 37 plate appearances this year. The 24-year-old had an .890 OPS at Toledo in 35 games last year and also stole 26 bases in three minor-league stops. It remains to be seen how much Perez will actually play in Detroit, but he's at least worth a waiver-wire consideration for his speed in AL-only fantasy leagues for now.

Jeremy Pena Picks Up First Stolen Base Sunday Night

Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts and his first stolen base of the season in Sunday's 3-1 victory over the division-rival Texas Rangers. The 26-year-old Dominican infielder is off to a strong start in his third big-league season with the Astros, going 12-for-36 (.333) with two home runs, a double, six RBI, the one stolen base and four runs scored in 38 plate appearances over his first 10 contests. Last year was a disappointment for Pena in the power department with just 10 long balls after he slugged 22 round-trippers with 63 RBI in 136 regular-season games in his rookie campaign in 2022. He's stole 24 bags in his first two seasons but could easily set a career-high in that category in 2024 if he continues to get the green light on the basepaths.

Henry Davis Goes Hitless Again Sunday

Pittsburgh Pirates catcher/outfielder Henry Davis went 0-for-2 with an RBI sacrifice fly and a strikeout out of the nine-hole in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles and is now hitless in his last five games to fall to 4-for-30 (.133) with no home runs, two RBI, four runs scored and 11 strikeouts in 37 plate appearances over the first nine games of his sophomore season. It's not the start that the 24-year-old or fantasy managers were hoping for from the former first overall pick in 2021 out of Louisville, but the good news is that Davis is going to continue playing regularly with both Yasmani Grandal (foot) and Jason Delay (knee) injured. Through his first 71 MLB games, though, Davis has hit only .204/.295/.333 with seven homers and 26 RBI in 292 trips to the plate.

No Timetable For Manny Machado To Return To Third Base

San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado (elbow) said there is no definitive target date for his return to being 100 percent recovered from offseason elbow surgery. It's been 220 days he last played third base in a game and 187 days since the extensor tendon in his right elbow was fixed. Manager Mike Shildt said the end of April was a "loose" goal, but "there's not really a timetable on it," Machado said. The All-Star third baseman said his shoulder isn't 100 percent, and he entered Sunday's finale against the Giants hitting just .190 with a .673 OPS. The 31-year-old has been told by doctors that he might not feel 100 percent until next year. Fantasy managers shouldn't panic yet, but it's fair to wonder if Machado's slow start this year at the plate is related to his elbow injury.

Tanner Banks To Serve As Opener On Monday

Chicago White Sox left-hander Tanner Banks is set to serve as the team's opener on Monday against the Guardians in Cleveland for the series opener. With Mike Clevinger yet to make his 2024 debut after signing late in spring training, the White Sox are being forced to go with a bullpen game every fifth day right now. The 32-year-old Banks will get the nod as the opener on Monday but shouldn't be expected to go more than an inning or two. The former 18th-round pick in 2014 out of Utah isn't recommended as a fantasy streamer in his opening duties, even in a pretty decent matchup against Cleveland. In his two relief innings so far in 2024, Banks hasn't allowed a run while giving up one hit, walking one and striking out three batters in two appearances.
