Logan Gilbert Enduring Rough Spring

Seattle Mariners right-hander Logan Gilbert has been getting roughed up so far in Cactus League action. The 26-year-old began his spring with a pair of shutout innings against the Royals on Feb. 28 but has since yielded an eye-popping 10 earned runs on nine hits, including two homers, with three walks against seven strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings and two starts since. The back-to-back blowups have jumped Gilbert's spring ERA to 14.21 along with a 2.05 WHIP across 6 1/3 innings of work. The tough spring results to date don't require the panic button due to Gilbert's track record but the situation is worth monitoring at this time of the year. He posted a 3.73 ERA and ranked fifth with a 4.7% BB% among qualified pitchers a season ago.

Trevor Stephan To Undergo Tommy John Surgery

Cleveland Guardians relief pitcher Trevor Stephan (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery in the next week or two and will miss the entire 2024 season. The right-hander had been shut down with what was referred to as a deep bone bruise in his elbow this spring and more recently had been seeking additional medical opinions on the issue. Stephan appeared in a hefty 71 games in the 2023 season, tied for 12th in baseball, working to a 4.06 ERA in that time. He also dominated to the tune of a 2.69 ERA alongside a big-time 24% K-BB% across 68 outings in the 2022 campaign. He was a solid asset in holds leagues, as he recorded 28 holds last season as the primary setup man to closer Emmanuel Clase.

Daniel Espino Undergoes Second Shoulder Surgery

Cleveland Guardians pitching prospect Daniel Espino (shoulder) has undergone a second right-shoulder surgery to repair an injured shoulder capsule and rotator cuff and will miss his second straight season. The right-hander underwent shoulder surgery last May and was scheduled to miss 12-14 months at the time but he will now be out far longer than that as he could very well miss a portion of the 2025 season, as well. The 23-year-old was drafted in the first round by the Guardians in 2019 but has missed significant time in his minor-league career, logging just 18 1/3 innings of 2.45 ERA ball in just four starts at Double-A in 2022 before shoulder issues set in. Espino's long-term fantasy value has major question marks after two significant shoulder injuries before his 24th birthday.

Jarred Kelenic To Platoon In Left Field In 2024

Atlanta Braves outfielder Jarred Kelenic has been told he will be in a platoon in left field alongside the newly-signed Adam Duvall this upcoming season. Braves president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos said earlier in the offseason he was leaning toward playing Kelenic every day in left after acquiring him in a trade from the Seattle Mariners. Perhaps a tough spring from Kelenic has led to the Duvall signing, as Kelenic is just 3-for-34 (.088) with no homers, one stolen base, and a .272 OPS across 12 games and 38 trips to the plate in Grapefruit League action. The 24-year-old former top prospect hit .253 with 11 home runs, 13 stolen bases, and a .746 OPS across 105 games with the Mariners in 2023, including a .259 average and a .774 OPS off of left-handed pitching. His fantasy value certainly takes a hit with the reduced playing time, but he still boasts a solid combination of power and speed that could take another step forward in the 2024 campaign.

Adam Duvall Inks One-Year Deal With Braves

Free-agent outfielder Adam Duvall has signed a one-year, $3 million deal to return to the Atlanta Braves. This marks the veteran's third career stint with the Braves after spending parts of four seasons with them from 2018-2021 before returning for 86 games in the 2022 season after being traded to the Marlins in 2021. Most recently, the 35-year-old spent the 2023 season with the Red Sox, hitting .247 with 21 home runs, four stolen bases, and an .834 OPS. His season was slowed by a broken wrist suffered in April as he would appear in just 92 games in the 2023 season. The plan is for Duvall and offseason trade acquisition Jarred Kelenic to platoon in left field for the Braves in the 2024 campaign. He should provide quality power as he has throughout his career but his playing time will be limited, putting a hard cap on his fantasy value.
