Jose Urquidy Was Tipping His Pitches

Houston Astros right-hander Jose Urquidy said he discovered this offseason that he was tipping some of his pitches last year by how he moved/squeezed his glove in his delivery. Urquidy worked over the winter to solve that problem while also strengthening his lat/shoulder area where he got hurt in 2023. The 28-year-old Mexican hurler only made 16 regular-season appearances (10 starts) last year over 63 innings due to right-shoulder inflammation and went 3-3 with a career-worst 5.29 ERA and 1.43 WHIP with 25 walks and 45 strikeouts. He's competing for a rotation spot this spring with J.P. France. With a 19.6% career strikeout rate and coming off a lost season due to injuries, Urquidy will be a matchup-based streamer in deep-mixed leagues, at best, if he wins a starting role in 2024.

Oswald Peraza Scratched With Tight Shoulder Tuesday

New York Yankees infielder Oswald Peraza (shoulder) was scratched from Tuesday's Grapefruit League game lineup with a tight shoulder, per manager Aaron Boone. The Yankees are hoping that his injury is merely day-to-day and did not indicate the need for any tests at this time. The 23-year-old had a disappointing rookie season offensively, slashing just .191/.267/.272 with two home runs and four stolen bases in 191 plate appearances. However, his defensive versatility will likely help him see somewhat consistent playing time. Fantasy managers should keep an eye out for further news over the next week or so.

Christian Yelich Takes Live Batting Practice Tuesday

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich faced teammates DL Hall and Devin Williams in live batting practice Tuesday but has yet to debut in a Cactus League game. The good news is that the 32-year-old is gearing up for the regular season and has gotten at least 600 plate appearances in each of the last two seasons. Yelich had a solid 2023, slashing .278/.370/.447 with 19 home runs, 106 runs scored, 76 RBI, and 28 stolen bases. The Brewers lineup may not be as strong as it has been, but Yelich should still provide all-around fantasy value hitting at the top of the lineup.

Kyle Schwarber Hitless In Lone Spring Game

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder/designated hitter Kyle Schwarber has appeared in just one spring training game early on, going 0-for-3 with a strikeout on Sunday. The 30-year-old is set to be the team's primary DH in 2024 after slashing .197/.343/.474 with 47 home runs, 108 runs scored, and 104 RBI in 720 plate appearances in 2023. Schwarber has never provided much in batting average with a career .227 BA. However, he offers elite power production and counting stats given the lineup he hits in. Fantasy managers willing to take the hit in average should be rewarded with power. Perhaps he can get off to a strong start this spring and pull his BA closer to his career average.

Giants, Blake Snell Deal A "50-50" Possibility

San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser reported Tuesday that the San Francisco Giants remain in the hunt for free-agent starting pitcher Blake Snell, and that the possibility of a deal is "50-50." No further details were mentioned. The team's rotation is already short-handed to begin the season, with Alex Cobb (hip) and Robbie Ray (elbow) on the injured list and several other potential starters dealing with injuries. Snell has had an injury history in the past, but he was healthy enough to win the National League Cy Young award last season and would provide a boost to the team to start the season, and even after some of their mainstays return.
