Matthew Liberatore Blanks Phillies On Sunday Afternoon

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Matthew Liberatore shut down the Phillies' potent lineup on Sunday afternoon, spinning six shutout innings while giving up just three singles and one walk and striking out seven. Liberatore improved his ERA to 3.93 and has an even better 1.91 FIP after his first three starts of the season. He has racked up 18 strikeouts in 18 1/3 innings and gone at least six innings in each of his three starts. The 25-year-old lefty is off to a strong start to the season and makes sense as a streaming play or NL-only addition after his strong start to the season. His next turn in the rotation is scheduled for Friday night against the Mets in New York.

Ryan Mountcastle Homers In Orioles Loss

Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle hit his first home run of the season on Sunday afternoon in Baltimore. His solo shot in the second inning gave the Orioles a 2-1 lead at the time, but the O's ultimately lost 7-6 in extra innings to split the rain-shortened two-game series with the Blue Jays. Mountcastle finished the day 2-for-4 and is hitting .271 in his first 15 games, matching his batting average from last season. This was his first home run of the season, and he now has four RBI to go with eight runs scored and a .300 wOBA. His barrel rate and hard-hit rate are up this year, per Statcast, and that could result in positive regression as the season continues if he keeps hitting the ball so well. Next up for Mountcastle and the Orioles is a three-game home series against the Guardians, which begins Tuesday after a scheduled off-day Monday.

William Contreras Crushes Third Homer Of The Season

Milwaukee Brewers catcher William Contreras connected on a two-run home run in the first inning off of Diamondbacks right-hander Zac Gallen, but the Brew Crew dropped the series finale in Arizona by a score of 5-2. Contreras went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the defeat and is now hitting .222 (12-for-54) with a pair of doubles, three home runs, and a .329 wOBA through his first 15 games. The 27-year-old catcher is one of the most reliable bats at the position, although his hard-hit rate and barrel rate have dipped in the early part of the season. Hopefully, Sunday's home run is the start of a turnaround in that trend. After a 3-3 road trip last week, Contreras and the Brewers are back home to start this week with a three-game series against the Tigers that begins on Monday night in Milwaukee.

Junior Caminero Launches Key Three-Run Homer In Rays Win

Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Junior Caminero had a massive three-run blast in the sixth inning that broke open his team's 8-3 win over the Braves. The 413-foot blast to left center was Caminero's third homer of the year. He also singled and scored in the first inning to go 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. On the season, the 21-year-old top prospect is now hitting .280 (14-for-50) with three home runs, a .220 ISO, and a .352 wOBA. Caminero has a solid 46.2% hard-hit rate and will try to keep crushing as his Rays welcome in the Red Sox for an AL East series starting on Monday night. He'll look to build on his success from last week, when he went 7-for-22 (.318) with four of those hits going for extra bases, including all three of his home runs this season.

A.J. Puk Strikes Out The Side In Save

Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher A.J. Puk closed out his team's 5-2 win on Sunday to earn his third save of the season. He has pitched six innings in six games this season and has three saves and two holds. He had a three-run lead when he entered on Sunday and struck out the side, although he did let the tying run come to the play after hitting Joey Ortiz with a pitch and walking pinch hitter Isaiah Collins. He buckled down and struck out the top two hitters in the Brewers' lineup, though, fanning Brice Turang and then getting Jackson Chourio swinging at a high fastball to end the game. Puk and Justin Martinez continue to share closing duties for the Dbacks and are in a platoon in the eighth and ninth innings, based on the matchup. Both have been effective this season, and the situation allows them to each produce both holds and saves.
