Masataka Yoshida Likely To Start On Injured List?

Boston Red Sox outfielder/designated hitter Masataka Yoshida (shoulder) continues to build up his throwing progression after having offseason right-shoulder surgery, but he's only throwing at 60 feet. Yoshida has appeared in Grapefruit League games at DH, but The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey thinks the likely scenario at this point is that Yoshida will start the season on the injured list with third baseman Rafael Devers (shoulders) serving as the DH. The 31-year-old Japanese outfielder has gone 4-for-16 with a double and four RBI in five spring training games. With Devers potentially serving as the regular DH for the majority of the 2025 season, it means that Yoshida would have to return to outfield work if he's to continue seeing regular at-bats. Yoshida has made plenty of contact in his two years in the big leagues, but his lack of power and dwindling playing time are an issue for his dwindling fantasy value.

Lucas Giolito Exits With Hamstring Tightness In Spring Debut

Boston Red Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito (elbow, hamstring) left his Grapefruit League debut on Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies with left-hamstring tightness. It was Giolito's first game since tearing his right UCL last March and then requiring a season-ending internal-brace procedure. However, the Boston Herald's Mac Cerullo is reporting that Giolito thinks it's "very minor" and isn't concerned about it after he said he felt his hamstring tighten up on his first pitch. The 30-year-old stayed in to finish an inning of work in which he gave up two runs and one hit while walking two. It's not exactly the outing Giolito or the Red Sox were hoping for after he missed the entire 2024 campaign. It's uncertain if this will keep him from pitching the fifth game of the regular season against the Orioles, but the Red Sox can't afford any more injuries to their starters with both Brayan Bello (shoulder) and Kutter Crawford starting on the injured list.UPDATE: Manager Alex Cora said Giolito will get an MRI exam on Wednesday.

Christian Walker Not Swinging Yet

Houston Astros first baseman Christian Walker (oblique) has yet to resume swinging a bat at camp but will take infield on Tuesday. Walker suffered a minor left-oblique injury and is being eased back into baseball activities. The 33-year-old veteran is running out of time to get back up to speed with Opening Day two weeks away, but there is still time. At worst, Walker will open the 2025 regular season on the injured list but miss the minimal amount of time. In that even, the left-handed-hitting Jon Singleton would take over at first base. Fantasy managers shouldn't be too concerned about Walker unless he has a setback as he ramps up to try to get back into Grapefruit League games before the end of spring training. Walker isn't a household fantasy name but isn't a bad consolation prize as a low-end No. 1 first baseman after having hit 30-plus homers in two of the last three seasons.

Padres Unlikely To Trade Dylan Cease

MLB Network's Jon Morosi reports that the San Diego Padres are unlikely to trade right-hander Dylan Cease before the start of the 2025 season, despite the fact that he's scheduled to be a free agent after this year. "I just do not think we are going to see a Dylan Cease trade that rescues the Yankees season," Morosi said in response to the fact that Yankees ace Gerrit Cole (elbow) will have season-ending Tommy John surgery. Not only are the Yankees hesitant to add to their payroll at the moment, but they would also be hesitant to give up top prospects such as Jasson Dominguez and Will Warren, who they will be counting on at the major-league level in 2025. The Padres could change their tune on Cease closer to this summer's trade deadline if the Padres are well out of contention, but for now, he appears primed to continue on as SD's ace. Cease's strikeout upside makes him a low-end No. 1/high-end No. 2 fantasy starter.

Cam Smith To Play Right Field In Spring Game Soon

Houston Astros third base prospect Cam Smith will play right field in a Grapefruit League game soon, according to manager Joe Espada. Before that, Smith is scheduled to played five innings in right field in a game on the back fields in camp on Tuesday. It remains to be seen if the Astros are serious about using the 22-year-old in the outfield during the 2025 season, but it could give Smith another avenue to playing time down the road. The No. 58 overall prospect, per MLB Pipeline, came over from the Chicago Cubs in the trade that sent outfielder Kyle Tucker to the Cubs in the offseason. Smith was the 14th overall pick last year and hit .313/.396/.609 with a 1.004 OPS, seven home runs and 24 RBI in 32 games across three minor-league levels after being drafted. He has the potential to hit for average and power but will likely spend most of 2025 in the minors.
