Justin Steele Making Spring Start On Tuesday

Chicago Cubs left-hander Justin Steele (illness) will make the Cactus League start on Tuesday versus the division-rival Milwaukee Brewers. Flu-like symptoms caused Steele to be scratched from his last scheduled spring start last Thursday, but the 29-year-old southpaw is feeling better now. After Tuesday's Cactus League outing, Steele's next start will come on March 19 in Tokyo, Japan, as part of the season-opening two-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Coming into Tuesday's start, he has allowed two earned runs on four hits (one homer) while walking none and fanning seven in five innings in his two spring training starts. Steele is a fine target as a No. 3 fantasy starting pitcher in season-long leagues, but he won't be a popular DFS target on March 19 against the defending World Series champions.

Matt Shaw Will Travel To Japan

Chicago Cubs third base prospect Matt Shaw (oblique) will travel with the team to Tokyo, Japan, for the season-opening two-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on March 18 and 19, according to manager Craig Counsell. Shaw suffered a mild oblique injury early in camp but has returned to Cactus League action and should start for the Cubbies at third base on March 18. The 23-year-old has played in four spring training games and has gone only 2-for-12 with two RBI and a run scored, but the most important thing is that he's healthy and ready to go for the start of the 2025 regular season. Despite having never played in a big-league game, Shaw should be relevant in all fantasy leagues right away after hitting .284/.379/.488 with 21 home runs and 31 steals at Double-A and Triple-A in 2024. MLB Pipeline has Shaw ranked as the No. 19 overall prospect this year.

Adolis Garcia On Track To Serve As DH On Thursday

Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said that outfielder Adolis Garcia (oblique) will get at-bats on the back fields at camp on Tuesday, and if all goes well, he will serve as the designated hitter in a Cactus League game by Thursday against the San Francisco Giants. The 32-year-old veteran is recovering from a Grade 1 left-oblique strain, but as long as he doesn't suffer a setback when he returns to game action, he'll have enough time to get ready for Opening Day in several weeks. The Cuban outfielder had the worst season of his career in 2024, but that consisted of a .224/.284/.400 slash line, .684 OPS, 25 home runs, 85 RBI, 11 stolen bases and 68 runs scored in 154 games played. Regaining his plate discipline and staying healthy will be key, but Garcia hits the ball hard enough and is in a good enough lineup for a bounce-back as a No. 3/4 fantasy outfielder.

Gunnar Henderson Hits In Cages

Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson (intercostal) hit in the batting cages on Tuesday in camp as he starts his progression from a mild right-intercostal strain. He is scheduled to take ground balls on Wednesday. The Orioles aren't ruling out Henderson for the start of the 2025 regular season, but he's running out of time to be ready at the end of March with only two weeks until Opening Day on March 27 against the division-rival Toronto Blue Jays. Fantasy managers shouldn't be too concerned, but Henderson has dropped from being RotoBaller's No. 7 overall player to No. 11 because of his injury. If the 23-year-old does open the year on the injured list, hopefully it will be a short stay. With Henderson sidelined, Jackson Holliday has seen action at shortstop. Ramon Urias and Jordan Westburg would be Baltimore primary options at second and third base.

Roman Anthony Likely To Start At Triple-A

Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu's (illness) absence this spring could open up a spot in the outfield on the Opening Day roster, but The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey writes that it remains likely that top prospect Roman Anthony will begin the year at Triple-A Worcester. Anthony missed about a week of Grapefruit League games and lost around 10 pounds with a similar virus to the one Abreu is dealing with. Journeyman Trayce Thompson has received a lot of praise from manager Alex Cora and leads all hitters in MLB with a 1.794 OPS in spring training. Six of his nine hits have cleared the fences in Florida, so it's looking like Thompson may make the Opening Day roster because of hot spring. Anthony, the No. 2 prospect in baseball per MLB Pipeline, will make his debut in the majors at some point in 2025, though, and is worth stashing in most fantasy leagues for his upside.
