Nacho Alvarez Jr. Exits Thursday's Game With Wrist Injury

Atlanta Braves infielder Nacho Alvarez Jr. (wrist) was lifted from Thursday's contest due to discomfort in his left wrist. Alvarez expressed pain when he struck out in the opening frame. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status as the team will likely provide an update in the coming days. Alvarez made his MLB debut last summer. Across an eight-game stint, the 21-year-old held a .100/.156/.100 line with just three total hits and 10 strikeouts. However, at the Triple-A level, the infielder showed strong contact skills as he posted a .297/.393/.463 line with nine doubles, 10 home runs, and 10 stolen bases. He held a 37:45 BB:K ratio. When cleared to return, fantasy managers should expect Alvarez to compete for a role on the Opening Day roster. However, given his lack of success in his first MLB stint, he will likely open the campaign at Triple-A.

X-Rays Come Back Negative On Jose Caballero

The X-rays came back negative on Tampa Bay Rays infielder Jose Caballero (foot). Caballero was lifted from Thursday's Grapefruit League contest after fouling a ball off his left foot. However, the infielder was able to avoid a serious injury and should be viewed as day-to-day. Fantasy managers should expect the team to exercise caution with him and may opt to rest him for a few days. Last summer, the 28-year-old logged a career-high 138 games at the MLB level. Caballero held a .227/.283/.347 line with just nine home runs. However, he provided his fantasy value with his speed as he stole 44 bags, which was the most in the American League. Fantasy managers should expect Caballero to operate in a depth role this season as the Rays signed Ha-Seong Kim (elbow) to be the primary shortstop. However, given his speed and strong defensive play, he should still find himself in the starting lineup quite often.

Tyler Soderstrom Could See Opportunities Behind The Plate

Athletics first baseman Tyler Soderstrom could still be in the mix to serve as the team's backup catcher. Soderstrom was drafted as a catcher with the 26th pick in the 2020 MLB Draft. However, the 23-year-old has begun to transition to first base. Last summer, Soderstrom made just one start behind the dish in the majors last season compared to the 59 he made at first base. However, he started 21 games behind the plate in the minor leagues compared to eight at first base. While Shea Langeliers is expected to be the team's primary backstop, Soderstrom could eventually earn the No. 2 role while still operating as their top first baseman. His defensive flexibility would allow the Athletics to have another player on their roster as he would be available to play two positions. Despite playing in only 60 MLB games last season, Soderstrom flashed high power upside as he went deep nine times and held a .429 SLG. He is worth a look as a late-round flier in deeper formats as he could gain catcher eligibility, which would boost his fantasy value.

Seth Martinez Designated For Assignment

The Miami Marlins have designated right-handed pitcher Seth Martinez for assignment. In a corresponding move, the team claimed right-handed pitcher Brett de Geus off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Marlins claimed Martinez off waivers earlier this week. Martinez has spent his entire MLB career with the Houston Astros. Last season, the 30-year-old posted a 3.59 ERA with a 1.27 WHIP across 52 2/3 innings of relief. He tallied just 36 punchouts but was able to limit hard contact as he generated a strong 6.7 percent barrel rate. However, he also generated a 4.08 xERA, which suggests that he may face some regression when he returns to the bump. Fantasy managers should expect Martinez to draw interest on waivers as a low-leverage relief option.

Samuel Basallo Blasts His First Home Run Of The Spring

Baltimore Orioles catching prospect Samuel Basallo hit his first home run of the spring on Thursday in an 11-8 Grapefruit League win over the Blue Jays. The solo blast was a crushed, clearing the scoreboard in center field. He's now 2-for-4 in three spring appearances, but perhaps more notable was that he came off the bench and entered the game defensively at first base, not at catcher. Adley Rutschman is entrenched as Baltimore's starting catcher and the team signed veteran Gary Sanchez in the offseason as the backup, so Basallo's path to playing time is blocked there for now, but his ability to play first base gives the Orioles added lineup flexibility which could get him to the majors sooner rather than later. With a strong spring, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the Orioles' top prospect (MLB No. 13) in the majors in 2025, although barring an injury, it won't be an early season call-up. As such, there's no reason to target the left-handed hitter in fantasy drafts unless you're in a deep league with bench space to stash the Dominican.
