German Marquez Expected To Make Two More Rehab Starts

Colorado Rockies manager Bud Black expects right-hander German Marquez (elbow) to make two more minor-league rehab starts with Double-A Hartford as he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Marquez gave up four earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning while throwing 33 pitches in his last rehab start on Friday for Triple-A Albuquerque. After that outing, the 29-year-old will now need two more starts in the minors to build his pitch count up before the Rockies are comfortable adding him to their starting rotation for the second half of the season. Marquez started his rehab assignment on June 12 and has allowed a total of eight earned runs while striking out 13 and walking three in 8 2/3 innings. Fantasy managers will want to temper expectations when he returns to the majors, but Marquez could have some deep-league streaming appeal.

Yency Almonte Shut Down

Chicago Cubs right-hander Yency Almonte (shoulder) didn't receive great news from the second opinion on his right-shoulder strain and will stop his throwing program, rest and then make a decision on whether to resume his rehab or consider a surgical option, according to manager Craig Counsell. Surgery would most likely put Almonte out for the remainder of the 2024 season. The 30-year-old veteran reliever went on the injured list back in May. Before his injury, he posted a 3.45 ERA (3.35 FIP), a 1.08 WHIP, his third career save, six holds, eight walks and 20 strikeouts in 15 2/3 relief innings in his first year in Chicago. The Cubs moved Almonte from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list on June 27.

Josh Jung Won't Return Until After All-Star Break

Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said that the team is shutting down third baseman Josh Jung (wrist) until next week to rest his surgically repaired wrist. If all goes well, Jung could start a minor-league rehab assignment next week, but he won't return until after the All-Star break. This really isn't a big surprise after the 26-year-old right-handed power hitter had his swinging session pushed back over the weekend due to soreness in his right wrist. He has not swung a bat since June 20, but the good news is that he's not dealing with any structural damage. Jung played in just four games this year before injuring his wrist on a hit-by-pitch but he should be rostered in all fantasy formats in an injured-list spot until he returns. Josh Smith will continue to benefit from regular playing time at the hot corner in Texas while Jung is sidelined.

No Clear Return Plan For Walker Buehler

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Walker Buehler's hip no longer appears to be bothering him, but there's no clear plan for his return from the 15-day injured list. Manager Dave Roberts said Buehler is throwing and has been working "offsite," both in Arizona and at a private facility in Florida, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. "He's doing a little bit of everything," Roberts said. Buehler returned from a second Tommy John procedure on his right elbow and had an up-and-down eight starts with the Blue before being put on the injured list with a hip injury. He posted a 5.84 ERA in his eight starts, and there are real questions about how effective his fastball will be moving forward after going under the knife again. Buehler probably won't be an option to return to LA's rotation until the second half of the season.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto Currently "Pain-Free"

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto (shoulder) is currently "pain-free," according to manager Dave Roberts. However, Yamamoto hasn't started throwing yet, and Roberts didn't know when that would begin. The Dodgers will surely handle him delicately as he deals with a strained rotator cuff after they signed him to a $325 million deal in the offseason. Because there's no timetable for when the 25-year-old Japanese rookie will even pick up a ball again, it wouldn't be a surprise if we didn't see him again in the Dodgers' starting rotation until August. Yamamoto has been fantasy relevant in all leagues in his first year in the majors, as he's gone 6-2 with a 2.92 ERA (2.67 FIP) and a 1.07 WHIP with an impressive 27.9% strikeout rate in 74 innings over 14 starts.
