Michael Lorenzen Being Eyed By The Orioles

Free-agent right-hander Michael Lorenzen is receiving interest from the Baltimore Orioles as the club remains active in the starting pitching market. Lorenzen split the 2023 season between the Tigers and Phillies, making his first career All-Star appearance. He worked to a solid 3.58 ERA in 18 starts with the Tigers but struggled to a 5.51 ERA in 11 outings (seven starts) following a trade-deadline deal to the Phillies. However, he threw his first-career no-hitter as a member of the Phillies on Aug. 9 against the Washington Nationals. He was demoted to the bullpen for his final four regular-season appearances and was left off of the Phillies' Wild Card roster before making two postseason appearances across the NLDS and NLCS. The 32-year-old sports a career 4.11 ERA in 342 appearances (69 starts) and recently held a showcase for 16 MLB teams on Jan. 23.

Domingo German Receiving Interest From Blue Jays, Orioles

Free-agent right-hander Domingo German is receiving interest on the open market from a pair of AL East clubs, namely the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles. The veteran hurler has a checkered past as he has served a domestic violence suspension, had multiple issues with "sticky stuff", and most recently sought, and received, treatment for alcohol abuse. The 31-year-old has spent his entire six-year MLB tenure with the New York Yankees but was not tendered a qualifying offer and became a free agent in November. Most recently, he worked to a 4.56 ERA across 20 outings (19 starts) with the Bombers in 2023 while he owns a 4.41 ERA across 112 big-league appearances (89 starts) while having issues with the home run ball by way of a career 1.62 HR/9 clip.

D-Backs Showing Interest In Joc Pederson

Free-agent outfielder Joc Pederson is receiving interest from the reigning NL champion Arizona Diamondbacks. While an outfielder by trade, the D-backs are viewing the 31-year-old as a designated hitter as Pederson has consistently drawn poor defensive grades throughout his career. His bat has largely remained productive, however, as he hit .235 with 15 home runs, a 13.4% BB%, and a .764 OPS across 425 plate appearances in a platoon corner outfield/DH role for the San Francisco Giants in 2023. He also struck out in just 20.9% of his plate appearances a season ago, his second-best mark in parts of 10 big-league seasons and well below his 23.7% career mark. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Emmanuel Rivera are currently projected to handle the bulk of DH reps for the D-backs in 2024.

Christian Arroyo Signs Minors Pact With Brewers

Free-agent infielder Christian Arroyo has signed a minor-league deal with the Milwaukee Brewers. The deal is worth $1.5 million, plus incentives, if Arroyo is able to crack the big-league roster. The 28-year-old has spent the last three seasons with the Red Sox, most recently hitting .241 with three home runs, one stolen base, and a .637 OPS across 66 appearances in the 2023 season, production that fell 35% below the league average, as per his 65 wRC+. However, Arroyo's bat graded slightly above the league average from 2021-2022 as he hit .286 with six HR and a .736 OPS across 300 trips to the plate in the 2022 campaign. He is a lifetime .252 hitter with 24 HR, eight SB, and a .693 OPS across 295 MLB contests. He will most likely vie for reps at third base with Brice Turang set for everyday reps at second base in 2024.

Jeter Downs, Oscar Gonzalez Staying With Yankees

The New York Yankees outrighted infielder Jeter Downs and outfielder Oscar Gonzalez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday. Downs and Gonzalez are now off the team's 40-man roster with spring training quickly approaching. Both players were claimed off waivers by the Yankees this offseason and will provide organizational depth for the 2024 campaign. Downs, 25, only has 50 career major-league plate appearances and has disappointed with a .182/.260/.273 slash line at the plate. Gonzalez, 26, impressed as a rookie in 2022 with the Cleveland Guardians but regressed last season with a .214/.239/.312 slash line, two home runs and 12 RBI in 54 games before being sent to the minors.
