Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Domingo German will make the start for the Pirates on Wednesday at Wrigley Field against the division-rival Chicago Cubs. The addition of German to Pittsburgh's rotation will give the team's young starters a little extra rest as we near the stretch run of the 2024 campaign. The 32-year-old German has a rough 6.11 ERA and 1.58 WHIP with 15 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings over six outings (one start) at the major-league level in 2024. He did toss six shutout innings with four walks and four strikeouts in his one start on Aug. 21 against the Texas Rangers, though. Since then, he's surrendered 10 earned runs on 11 hits (one homer) while walking five and striking out seven in just 5 2/3 innings. The matchup against Chicago isn't a terrible one, but German should only be considered by desperate fantasy managers in the deepest of leagues.
The Pittsburgh Pirates agreed with free-agent right-hander Domingo German on a $1.5 million minor-league deal on Friday. The 31-year-old Dominican hurler tossed a no-hitter against the lowly Oakland Athletics last year while with the New York Yankees, but that was easily the highlight of his season, as he finished with a 5-7 record, 4.56 ERA (4.65 FIP) and 1.08 WHIP with 34 walks and 114 strikeouts in 108 2/3 innings pitched over his 20 appearances (19 starts) in his sixth year in pinstripes. He'll have a better opportunity with the rebuilding Pirates, but German is unlikely to be much of a fantasy asset outside of NL-only leagues if he's with the big-league roster in 2024. In his six-year career, German holds a 4.41 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with 2.8 walks per nine innings and 9.4 K's per nine innings in 522 1/3 frames.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are still looking to bolster their starting rotation for 2024 and are reportedly considering free agents Noah Syndergaard and Domingo German, per Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Jason Mackey. Mackey reported that the team is doing more investigation into German's history to determine how comfortable they would be in signing him, given his numerous off-field incidents last season. As for Syndergaard, the Pirates expressed interest in him earlier this year. The 31-year-old pitched 88 2/3 innings in 18 starts for the Dodgers and Guardians in 2023, going 2-6 with a 6.50 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, and 14.3% strikeout rate. Thor used to be a viable fantasy asset, but he has a lot to prove before becoming fantasy-relevant again, and joining the Pirates would not help his value.
