Jack Leiter A Candidate To Start On Wednesday For Rangers

Texas Rangers right-handed pitching prospect Jack Leiter is a candidate to start next Wednesday on the road against the Chicago White Sox. Leiter, the team's No. 4 prospect per MLB Pipeline, could rejoin Texas' starting rotation late in the season now that it looks increasingly unlikely the Rangers will make the postseason. The 24-year-old former second overall pick in 2021 from Vanderbilt looked overmatched in his first three MLB starts earlier this year, surrendering 19 runs (17 earned) on 18 hits (three homers) while walking six and striking out seven in 9 1/3 innings. Leiter has looked a lot better at Triple-A Round Rock lately, though, prompting the Rangers to consider giving him another shot in the big leagues. A matchup against the lowly White Sox doesn't get much better for fantasy streaming purposes. Leiter will need to show better command of his fastball to find success at the highest level.

Julio Rodriguez Returns To Center Field

Seattle Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez (ankle) is back in center field and is hitting second for the Mariners on Friday against the San Francisco Giants and rookie right-hander Hayden Birdsong in the series opener at T-Mobile Park. Rodriguez had been serving exclusively as the designated hitter since returning from a sprained ankle, and this will be his first start in center field since July 21 due to a high-ankle sprain. Victor Robles is dealing with a hip injury and is out, but he is likely to see less playing time now that J-Rod is healthy enough to play defense. Fantasy managers can only hope that the 23-year-old Rodriguez can get going to close out the year after a down year offensively. Since his return from the injured list on Aug. 11, he's gone 8-for-36 (.222) with two doubles, an RBI and 10 strikeouts in nine games played. J-Rod hasn't faced Birdsong in his career.

Austin Hays Reinstated And Starting On Friday

The Philadelphia Phillies reinstated outfielder Austin Hays (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list on Friday and optioned outfielder Cal Stevenson to Triple-A Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move. Hays will immediately step into the starting lineup on Friday against the Kansas City Royals and veteran right-hander Michael Wacha at Kauffman Stadium, playing left field and batting ninth. The 29-year-old required just two minor-league rehab games and will now return to regular duties in left field for the Phils. Hays was a first-time All-Star in 2023 with the Baltimore Orioles, but he got off to a slow start this year and was having trouble finding regular playing time in a crowded outfield. He'll have more fantasy upside the rest of the way in Philly and was hitting .263 (10-for-38) with a homer and four RBI in his first 10 games with the team before landing on the shelf.

Miguel Rojas Returns To The Lineup

Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Miguel Rojas (hamstring) is back in the starting lineup ahead of Friday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. The veteran infielder is making his return after being scratched from Wednesday's game due to a left hamstring issue. The 35-year-old will cover shortstop and bat seventh versus left-hander Tyler Alexander on Friday. Rojas has been hot with 13 hits and five RBI since his return from the injured list. He'll likely lose some playing time with Tommy Edman back in the mix now. However, Rojas is worth looking at as a streaming option ahead of Friday's game.

Jordan Montgomery Headed To Bullpen

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery will shift to the bullpen going forward. The D-Backs made Montgomery the odd man out with six healthy starters right now. The left-hander has been awful to the tune of a 6.44 ERA with a 67/36 K/BB ratio across 19 starts this season. Before this season, Montgomery had a solid track record over multiple seasons. The 2024 campaign is by far his worst of his professional career. The D-Backs will give the starting spot to Ryne Nelson who will take the mound against the Boston Red Sox on Friday. Nelson has posted quality starts in each of his last two outings, so he should be worth a look as a streaming option for Friday's slate.
