Fantasy Baseball Bullpen Report (5/14)

Before we get to the News and Notes, I want to give an overview of how I approach the Save Spec of the Week section of the Bullpen Report. Sometimes, the chosen pitcher has an imminent likelihood of earning saves due to injury or demotion of the team’s existing closer. Dennis Santana fit that description as a selection in early April, as did Shelby Miller when I wrote about him a few weeks later. Those types of specs are worth an immediate add in daily leagues and should be included in bid lists for weekend free agency.

Other times, I like to look ahead and feature pitchers who could factor into their team’s save opportunities later in the season. Such was the case for Liam Hendriks last week. We don’t need to rush out and add specs on a longer path to the ninth inning, so I’ll try to be clear moving forward about what type of save spec I choose each week.

News and Notes

Arizona Diamondbacks

The future of Arizona’s closer role is coming back into focus. Incumbent closer Shelby Miller had appeared to briefly cede that role to Kevin Ginkel last week but has secured the team’s only save so far this week. His days are numbered, however, as Justin Martinez will likely return to the active roster soon and should immediately slot back into the ninth inning.

Looking further ahead, A.J. Puk has been cleared to resume throwing and, barring any setbacks, should be ready to return early in the summer. If a healthy Martinez and Puk are on the roster together later this year, expect a matchup-based job share like we saw at the beginning of the season.
