And here we are. With just over a week left in the MLB regular season, we’ve reached the end of the line. With so few games left to play and everything to play for, the fine margins could be everything — one save, one win or even one strikeout could be the difference between a cash finish in your league and an honorable mention.
A few reminders for the last week:
-
- This is less applicable to relievers than it is to starting pitchers or hitters, but teams with postseason spots locked up will avoid taxing their key players in the last week and especially in the last series before the playoffs begin. That could lead to some bizarre names showing up in box scores.
-
- Older closers or relievers nursing smaller nicks and bruises are likely to shut it down. That means the next man up could sneak a save.
-
- The same goes for younger pitchers approaching career-highs in innings, although this is again slightly less applicable to relievers.
-
- The lineups the good teams put out in the last week will often be missing several stalwarts. That shifts the odds closer to even in series where a “bad” team is ending the season against a playoff team, increasing the chances they need to lock down a win at some point.
Since this is the last Bullpen Report of the season, we’ll take a look around the whole league and see where each team stands heading into the home stretch.

Craig Kimbrel’s reign of terror is over, as the O’s DFA’d the veteran Wednesday to make room for Bryan Baker’s return from the injured list. Yennier Canó has been held out the last few days with forearm tightness, but he was unlikely to snatch any opportunities from Seranthony Domínguez — who has seemingly established himself as the clear No. 1 closing option despite an addiction to giving up long balls — in the first place. Jacob Webb or Baker may grab a loose one in the last week — barring a complete no-show to end the year, the O’s are pretty firmly set in the WC1 so they may opt to preserve Seranthony in their last series.
