Reports: Chargers won’t tag Hunter Henry

The Los Angeles Chargers reportedly informed TE Hunter Henry Tuesday he will not be franchise tagged, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, leaving Henry open to test free agency.

Henry, 26, was the Chargers’ second-round pick in 2016. He played under the franchise tag in 2020. Henry was the team’s No. 2 tight end behind Antonio Gates in 2016 and 2017 but managed to score a combined 12 touchdowns in those two seasons. After missing the 2018 season to a torn ACL, he played 12 and 14 games over the last two seasons, with between 600 and 700 yards both years and a combined nine scores.

There’s no need for major analysis on this right now, but the move does leave the Chargers without a viable pass catcher at tight end. That will help Keenan Allen from a target volume standpoint.
