The Carolina Panthers signed veteran wide receiver Trenton Irwin on Tuesday, according to NFL.com. The former Cincinnati Bengal will start on the practice squad, but the belief is he will join the active roster in short order. The 29-year-old has hauled in 46 receptions for 601 yards and five touchdowns in 40 career games and was recently let go by the Bengals. The Panthers have a thin wide receiver group behind Adam Thielen and Xavier Legette, so don't rule Irwin out of making an impact over the next four games. That said, it would be surprising if he entered the fantasy football radar.

In addition to a limited role on offense this year with rookie Jermaine Burton now around, the 28-year-old Irwin has seen fewer punt-return duties on special teams as well. Irwin had only been active in seven games for the Bengals in his sixth year with the team and had caught three of 10 targets for 15 yards before being let go. He'll now try to latch on with another organization for the remainder of the season and will be unlikely to have a significant role if he makes it back onto a 53-man active roster. In his five-plus seasons in the NFL with the Bengals, Irwin has put up 46 catches for 601 yards and five touchdowns in 41 regular-season games (nine starts).

Cincinnati Bengals wide receivers Charlie Jones (groin) and Trenton Irwin (coach's decision) are both inactive for Week 13 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Jones had been listed as doubtful after being sidelined during practice on Friday, and he's now set to miss his fourth consecutive game. Meanwhile, Irwin had not been on the injury report but is a healthy scratch once again. As a result, Isaiah Williams and Jermaine Burton should earn additional snaps.

However, with Tee Higgins, Ja'Marr Chase, and Andrei Iosivas on the field, along with Zack Moss (ankle) and Chase Brown (quadriceps) cleared for action, Irwin isn't expected to get much playing time. The same would have been true for Burton.

In the first two weeks of the season in losses to the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs, Irwin caught just two of his eight targets for 11 yards, so he really wasn't on the fantasy radar to begin with. With Higgins back in the fold, quarterback Joe Burrow's fantasy upside as a QB1 will go up, although it wouldn't be a surprise to see the Bengals ease Higgins into a full workload in terms of offensive snaps. Ja'Marr Chase, Higgins and Andrei Iosivas figure to start in three-receiver sets moving forward, with rookie Jermaine Burton, Charlie Jones and Irwin serving as depth.
