Los Angeles Rams running back Cody Schrader hasn't gotten any NFL work yet, but coach Sean McVay said he wants to see what the rookie can bring by getting him some work in Week 18 against the Seahawks. Schrader was an undrafted rookie out of Missouri last season who signed with the 49ers last May. He was waived at the end of training camp and claimed by the Rams. Schrader was very productive for the Tigers last season, setting the single-season record with 1,627 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. However, he hasn't seen any NFL action and is mostly viewed as a depth option going forward. He could get double-digit touches this week, though, so he's a flier to keep an eye on for very deep formats going forward. He's RotoBaller's RB73 this week, so he doesn't make a good fantasy play at this point in his NFL journey.
San Francisco 49ers running backs Matt Breida and Cody Schrader each handled seven carries in the team's 16-10 preseason victory over the New Orleans Saints in Santa Clara on Sunday night. Breida, who returns to San Francisco after spending four years elsewhere, made more of his opportunity, taking his carries for 24 yards and catching both of his two targets for 25 yards. With his own seven carries, the undrafted rookie Schrader managed just 15 yards and caught one of three targets for five yards. San Francisco's running back room is banged up right now, and both players sit behind starter Christian McCaffrey as well as backups Elijah Mitchell, Jordan Mason, and fourth-round pick Isaac Guerendo. Neither player is likely to be fantasy-relevant in 2024. Breida would seem to have the inside track out of the two to make the team if the injury problems persist and Schrader is only a fringe deep-dynasty stash.
Undrafted free-agent running back Cody Schrader signed a deal with the San Francisco 49ers to take part in their rookie minicamp, according to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report. The 24-year-old began his collegiate career at the Division II level at Truman State in 2018 but saw limited action until his 2021 campaign. During that season, he rushed 300 times for 2,074 yards and 25 touchdowns. He then transferred to Missouri as a walk-on and vastly exceeded expectations. In two seasons in Columbia, he racked up 2,372 rushing yards, 328 receiving yards, and 23 total touchdowns. Although he's likely a longshot to make the Niners' 53-man roster, the 2023 unanimous All-American has experience with being overlooked and counted out, so it will be interesting to see if he can make an impact in the NFL for one of the 32 franchises.
