The New York Jets lost to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
No one was surprised by this result – if anything, the Jets gave the world a bit of a shock by dragging Miami kicking and screaming into overtime. Aaron Rodgers throwing for 300 yards? Garrett Wilson repeatedly getting open and making plays? Holding the Dolphins to 1-for-9 on third downs? This was the sort of Jets team fans were hoping to see when they made a big splash by bringing Rodgers in – a competitive team against at least a borderline playoff-caliber opponent. The kind of day that should be commonplace for the Jets.
But no, the Jets lost 32-26. They lost for the 144th time since losing the AFC Championship Game on January 23, 2011. This rakns third in the league over that period. Sure, a couple teams have lost more since then – we see you, long-suffering Jaguars and Browns fans – but at least everyone else has gotten to experience some small slice of success over the past 14 years. Not the Jets, though. With their loss to Miami, the Jets have once again been eliminated from playoff contention. Fourteen straight years in the wilderness.
New York’s 14-season playoff drought is the longest in the Big 4 professional sports, a crown they took over when the Sacramento Kings finally made the playoffs after the 2022-23 NBA season. In that near decade-and-a-half stretch, they’ve never been the worst team in the league. In fact, in 2015, they would have made the playoffs at 10-6 had we had the current 14-team playoffs, booking a date with the New England Patriots. And yet, this is the eighth time in those 14 years they have been eliminated with at least four games to play and the seventh time they’ve been knocked out before the middle of December. As far as fallow periods go, it’s tough to top this one.
With an average DVOA of -13.2%, routinely placing in the bottom 10 of our rankings, it’s been an era to forget for Jets fans. Mostly, at least. But for every buttfumble or torn Achilles, there have been moments of hope and light in the darkness. Today, we’re putting together the best team we can from the Jets’ playoff drought, to see if we can’t assemble a team that could at least finally bring a wild card game to East Rutherford.
A couple notes before we get into it. We’re looking for best seasons as opposed to necessarily best players, so a one-off out-of-character year beats multiple years of solid, steady production. We also can’t have multiple years of the same guy, so we can’t have the Revis Archipelago in our secondary. Picks were made referencing DVOA, our various advanced charting stats, and the tear-stained memories of a Jets fan who asked to remain nameless. This is what you’ve done to your fanbase, New York! Let’s see if we can’t assemble a team that makes people proud instead of queasy to back Gang Green.
