Former Chargers receiver Josh Palmer left the team Monday for the Bills, signing with Buffalo for a reported three-year deal worth $36 million, with $18 million guaranteed. Palmer spent the first four years of his career with Los Angeles.

Palmer, a third-round pick in 2021, found his way into big roles in Los Angeles each of the last three years, peaking in 2022 with 107 targets, 72 receptions, 769 yards and 3 touchdowns, the WR37 in PPR that year. He’s had 581 and 584 yards the last two years, with 3 scores combined. Overall, for four years with the Chargers, Palmer had produced 2,287 yards on 182 receptions with 10 touchdowns.

Palmer wouldn’t normally move the needle as a signing, but the length (three years) and amount ($36 million) of the deal, combined with an appealing landing spot, make him interesting. The only receivers still on the roster in Buffalo are Keon Coleman, Khalil Shakir and Curtis Samuel, and none of them carries the breakaway ability Palmer has displayed.

Even with that, Palmer is more appealing as a super-deep DFS-type play than a season-long fantasy option, at least until we see him start to produce. Per the FTN StatsHub, Palmer had a 15.2-yard average depth of target, much deeper than Shakir (5.5 yards) or Samuel (4.6). Coleman had an equal 15.2-yard aDOT, but Palmer caught a much higher percentage of his targets last year (60.0% to 50.9%). And the Bills are likely to further bolster the receiving corps this offseason, after which Palmer might be made irrelevant. But with that contract, he’s got the inside track on a role, and it could offer nice big-play upside.
