Gabe Davis Leaves Buffalo for Jacksonville, Fantasy Fallout

After four seasons in Buffalo, Gabe Davis is headed south. The veteran receiver agreed to terms on a three-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars. This signing likely means the end of Calvin Ridley’s time in Jacksonville. The Jags seemed to be on the fence with Ridley, as re-signing him would escalate the third-round pick they sent to the Falcons in exchange for Ridley to a second-rounder.

If Ridley is in fact out, Davis will slide into the starting trio along with Christian Kirk and Zay Jones. Kirk and TE Evan Engram figure to top the target pecking order, leaving Davis to duke it out with Jones for the No. 3 spot. Last season, Engram led the Jags with 142 targets followed by Ridley with 136 and Kirk at 85 (in 12 games).

While the Jags aren’t shy when it comes to throwing the football (620 passing attempts last season), it’s tough to envision a scenario where Davis hits triple-digit targets. Davis’ career high of 93 came in 2022. He saw 81 targets in 17 games played last season. He finished as fantasy’s No. 35 wide receiver in 2022 and only managed a 41st-place finish last year.

Davis has proven to be extremely boom-or-bust for fantasy purposes. He has shown massive weekly upside over his career. At the same time, he’s more than capable of putting up a fantasy goose egg any given week. That profile plus the logjam for Trevor Lawrence’s attention doesn’t move the needle for Davis’ 2024 fantasy outlook. He’s on the outside looking in at WR3 territory.

As for his former team, the Bills now have a hole to fill in their wide receiver room. Stefon Diggs is still there along with Khalil Shakir in the slot. However, there really isn’t anyone currently on the depth chart who figures to slide into a starting role. Given Buffalo’s salary cap woes, it’s likely they don’t address the position until next month’s draft.
