The Arizona Cardinals enter their third season under head coach Kliff Kingsbury. To this point, the team’s results with Kingsbury have been mixed. One the one hand, his Cardinals are a mediocre 13-18-1 since 2019. On the other hand, they have progressively improved from 3-13 in 2018 to 5-10-1 and 8-8 over the past two seasons, and 2019 No. 1 pick Kyler Murray has developed into a top-tier dual-threat quarterback under Kingsbury’s guidance.
How will the Cardinals do in 2021?
2021 Arizona Cardinals season preview
While the Arizona Cardinals are one of the most sought-after teams to target in fantasy football, they also have a chance to become one of the better teams in the NFC from a real-life football perspective as well.
Brett Whitefield of FTN Network broke down and ranked all 32 offensive lines in the NFL, and the Cardinals ranked 12th. Here is the excerpt from Whitefield:
“Arizona was sneakily one of the better pass-pro units in the NFL last season. After being utterly abysmal in 2019, they bounced back in a major way and got good play from their OT duo D.J. Humphries and Kelvin Beachum. Humphries, who had a breakout 2020 campaign, established himself as a dominant run blocker as well. The Cardinals upgraded their worst position along the line by trading for Rodney Hudson, who should still have some good football left in him.”
Stat to know: Ranked top-10 in both time to pressure per dropback (2.45 seconds) and yards before contact per carry (1.97 yards).
Cardinals offense set to improve in 2021
Derek Brown broke down all 32 teams’ coaches and coordinators, and took a deep dive into the Arizona Cardinals’ play-calling and offensive scheme. Here is an excerpt to show optimism is the way to go in 2021 for the Cards:
“Despite showing improvement last year on a per-drive basis, Kingsbury’s offense has hovered around league average. Since 2019 the Cardinals have scored 0.1 points per drive above the NFL average and finished 0.45 yards per drive below the NFL mean. This year Arizona must show they can take a step forward for a full 17 games.”
On Mean Streets, Chris Meaney was joined by Jennifer Piacenti to discuss the Arizona Cardinals ahead of the 2021 season.
Jeff Ratcliffe is quite high on both Kyler Murray and DeAndre Hopkins in 2021, as noted in his Fantasy Football Draft Guide

Super Bowl 56 Odds – Arizona Cardinals
+4500, DraftKings
With +4500 odds, the Cardinals have a 2.17% implied probability to win the Super Bowl (per our Betting Odds Calculator).
While they are near the middle of the league-wide pack at +4500, the Cardinals actually rank fourth in the NFC West, behind the 49ers (+1400), Rams (+1400), and Seahawks (+2000), all of whom have significantly more favorable odds.
Playing in perhaps the hardest division in football, the Cardinals will face an incredibly hard regular-season road to the Super Bowl, and it’s one I don’t see them walking to completion.
I’m staying away from this bet.
Arizona Cardinals win total in 2021
- Total: 8.5, DraftKings
- Over: +100
- Under: -120
- Lean: Over 8.5
Last year really was a tale of two seasons for the Cardinals. Before quarterback Kyler Murray suffered a season-altering shoulder injury in Week 11 against the Seahawks, he was having an MVP-caliber campaign. The Cardinals were 6-3, and Murray had passed for 2,375 yards and 17 touchdowns to eight interceptions with a 68.2% completion rate and rushed for 604 yards and 10 touchdowns on 87 carries.
Through Week 10, Murray looked like one of the best players in football.
But in Weeks 11-17, Murray was a different player. With his injured shoulder, he couldn’t pass or run as effectively, and the Cardinals suffered for it, going 2-5 in the final stretch to close the year 8-8.
The difference in Murray’s pre- and post-injury play is evident in his efficiency numbers:
- Weeks 1-10: 7.57 adjusted yards per attempt, 6.94 yards per carry
- Weeks 11-17: 6.46 adjusted yards per attempt, 4.67 yards per carry
With the additions of center Rodney Hudson, defensive end J.J. Watt, and wide receiver Rondale Moore — among others — the Cardinals should be a better team this year than they were last year.
I’m not officially betting the over because the win total market tends to be inflated, but I do lean that direction. If Murray is able to stay healthy for a supermajority of the season, I like the Cardinals chances of getting to nine wins, even in a tough division.
Cardinals Week 1 NFL odds and trends
Let’s take a look at the odds for Week 1 between the Arizona Cardinals and the Tennessee Titans, my betting picks for both the spread and total, and some betting trends.
Titans vs. Cardinals Week 1 picks – Spread
- Spread: +3, DraftKings
- Odds: -110
- Bet: Cardinals
Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury isn’t an elite strategist or play caller. His transition from college to NFL has not been smooth.
When his Cardinals have clearly had an edge on their opponents and the betting market has made them home favorites, Kingsbury has underwhelmed with a 2-5 record against the spread. His Cardinals seem to underperform when they should play their best.
But Kingsbury is likely better than most people believe. Even though his Cardinals are just 13-18-1 straight up over the past two seasons, they have notably outperformed expectations in negative circumstances.
- As underdogs: 12-7-2 ATS
- On the road: 9-5-2 ATS
And as road underdogs, they are 7-3-2 ATS.
If you look in our FTN Bet Tracker, where I’ve logged my Week 1 bets, you’ll see that I’m backing the Cardinals.
Titans vs. Cardinals Week 1 picks – Total
- Total: 51.5, DraftKings
- Odds: -110
- Bet: Over
The Cardinals-Titans over is one of my favorite Week 1 totals, and the thesis for this play is simple: The Cardinals play fast, and the Titans put up points.
The Cardinals play at a blistering pace, and last year they had a league-high no-huddle rate of 38.4% (per our No-Huddle Offense Stats Tool). Against a Titans defense that had bottom-four marks with 19 sacks and 66 quarterback hits in 2020, the Cardinals should be able to move the ball.
And all the Titans do at home is score. With quarterback Ryan Tannehill, the over is 11-3-1 at Nissan Stadium. With wide receiver Julio Jones, the Titans offense should be even more dynamic this year.
I expect a high-scoring game for the Cardinals and Titans in Week 1.
