Padres Acquiring Tanner Scott From The Marlins

The San Diego Padres are finalizing a deal on Tuesday to acquire left-handed closer Tanner Scott from the Miami Marlins, according to sources. Check back for the return headed back to Miami for Scott, who has been one of the most dominant closers in baseball of late. The 30-year-old southpaw made the All-Star team for the first time in his career in 2024 and currently is 6-5 with a career-low 1.18 ERA (3.24 FIP) and 1.01 WHIP with 53 strikeouts, 27 walks and 18 saves in 45 2/3 relief innings. Scott has racked up 50 saves for the Fish in 185 appearances over the last three seasons and hasn't allowed an earned run since June 13. The bad news for his fantasy mangers, though, is that he could lose plenty of value with the move to San Diego, where he may be asked to share closing duties with hard-throwing right-hander Robert Suarez. It's unclear how the two closers will be used in SD.UPDATE: In addition to Scott, the Padres will receive Bryan Hoeing in exchange for Robby Snelling, Adam Mazur, Graham Pauley and Jay Beshears.

Yankees Pursuing Tanner Scott

The New York Yankees are one of six contending teams said to be prominently involved in trade talks for Miami Marlins All-Star left-hander Tanner Scott, who hasn't allowed an earned run since June 13 and is the most coveted closer on this year's trade market. The Baltimore Orioles, Scott's former team, are among five more teams also at the front of the pack seeking the best closer that is surely to be dealt by Tuesday's deadline. The Phillies, Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Mariners are believed to be going after Scott, too. Scott will be a free agent after this year and has a stingy 1.18 ERA and has held opponents to a .127 batting average. Current Yankees closer Clay Holmes also made the All-Star team this year but has a 7.14 ERA since June 13. He's been an above-average closer for the Yanks, but he's also blown seven of 28 save chances in 2024.

The 29-year-old has been a solid closer for the Marlins and in fantasy this season, posting a 6-5 record, 1.30 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, and 46 strikeouts over 41 2/3 innings of work while blowing just two saves.
