Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Tanner Houck pitched beautifully on Monday against the Athletics, tossing six scoreless innings with a whopping 10 strikeouts, suitable for a quality start and win for Houck. Despite facing a lowly Athletics lineup, Houck dominated, giving up only three hits and did not walk a batter. Houck is lined up for another start this week against the Los Angeles Angels and its mediocre lineup. After Monday's outstanding performance, Houck is worth starting against the Angels this weekend and picking up if he is on waivers.
Boston Red Sox right-hander Tanner Houck has locked up one of the final spots in the team's Opening Day starting rotation. He'll join Brayan Bello, Nick Pivetta, Kutter Crawford and Garrett Whitlock. Houck definitely earned the starting spot by posting a 2.40 ERA with only three walks and 16 strikeouts in 15 innings in Grapefruit League action this spring. The 27-year-old had a career-worst 5.01 ERA (4.43 FIP) and 1.37 WHIP while walking 41 and striking out 99 in a career-high 106 innings over 21 starts for the Red Sox last year. It was Houck's first year being used exclusively as a starter by the BoSox, so hopefully for fantasy managers in AL-only leagues, he'll be able to take a step forward in 2024. Houck will need to improve against left-handed hitters in order to accomplish that.
Boston Red Sox right-hander Tanner Houck is preparing as a starter with spring training just around the corner, but he could be needed in relief if the team decides to trade closer Kenley Jansen before the start of the 2024 season. The 27-year-old will be competing for a rotation spot in camp, and if he loses that battle, he'll also be ticketed for a relief role. He'll have more fantasy appeal as a starter, but he has experience out of the bullpen as well, starting just four of his 32 appearances for the BoSox in 2022. Houck made some adjustments to his arsenal this offseason after going 6-10 with a career-worst 5.01 ERA (4.43 FIP) and 1.37 WHIP with 41 walks and a career-high 99 strikeouts in 106 innings over 21 starts last year. Houck has had a below-average strikeout rate as a starter and relies more on ground balls for his success on the mound.
