Toronto Blue Jays rookie infielder Spencer Horwitz is not in the team's starting lineup on Friday against the Cleveland Guardians. Fellow rookie Orelvis Martinez will make his major-league debut at second base and will bat eighth against Guardians right-hander Carlos Carrasco. Horwitz, the team's No. 16 prospect per MLB Pipeline, made five straight starts after initially being called up but has now found himself on the bench in three of the last seven games. The 26-year-old former 24th-round pick in 2019 out of Radford University has gotten off to a strong start in his first 34 big-league at-bats, hitting .353, although he still has yet to leave the yard and has driven in only three runs. Horwitz is currently in the midst of a four-game hitting streak in which he's gone 5-for-15 with a double and RBI.
Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Spencer Horwitz went 2-for-4 in Wednesday's 7-3 loss to the Red Sox. Horwitz has now hit safely in eight of the nine games he's started since being called up, going 12-for-34 (.353) with four multi-hit games. The 26-year-old is showing a patient eye at the plate as well, coaxing six walks already (plus one intentional pass) and striking out just five times. He certainly looks like an offensive upgrade over what the Jays had been putting out there before his recall, and he's eligible at both 2B and 1B on Yahoo. The left-handed hitter is available in 95% of Yahoo league for managers in need of his services.
Toronto Blue Jays first base prospect Spencer Horwitz posted a stellar .375/.468/.650 line through his final 11 games of the month to cap off a productive May. Across the entire month, the 26-year-old posted a strong .299/.395/.439 line with 16 RBI and a 15:22 BB:K ratio. Horwitz made his major league debut and performed well across a small 15-game sample size with a .256 AVG. Over the past three seasons, the Radford product logged 205 games at the Triple-A level and should be expected to have an extended opportunity in Toronto this summer. The number 16th-ranked prospect in the Toronto system could be worth adding in AL-only leagues when given the promotion.
While Toronto Blue Jays first base prospect Spencer Horwitz lacks high-end power and could be limited to first base in the big leagues, but his on-base ability is rare and is something that should translate well to the majors after he had a .450 on-base percentage at Triple-A Buffalo in 2023. He has also beat up on right-handed pitching as a left-handed hitter and showed more power in those matchups, which could make him a platoon puzzle piece for the Blue Jays sooner than later. Toronto thinks that Horwitz could become a regular contributor, but that's not going to come with regular at-bats in 2024, and how the team addresses the designated hitter spot will have a direct impact on Horwitz. The 26-year-old has an intriguing bat, but he's unlikely to see much playing time given Toronto's stacked roster.
